Assistant Director of Athletics for Coaching and Operations The Assistant Director of Athletics for Coaching and Operations (Assistant AD) is a 12-month administrative position that reports to the Director of Athletics and contributes to the development of a positive, equitable athletic experience for all MS and US students through recruitment, training, evaluation, and retention of coaches. Recruitment: The Assistant AD is responsible for recruiting qualified MS and US coaches who are fully aligned with Riverdale’s mission and values. This includes: - Determining staffing needs and programmatic changes based on participation in MS and US sports.
- Using the CATS database or Lever to manage the applicant pool and hiring process.
- Developing and running an inclusive and anti-bias hiring process that yields coaches who are committed to developing a positive team culture, ensuring a positive student athlete experience, and understand the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Liaising with the HR Department to ensure that all coaches have completed proper background checks, have received a Riverdale ID badge, and have completed payroll paperwork.
Training: The Assistant AD is the key administrator who develops the model of effective Riverdale coaching education. They work in partnership with the Director of Athletics, athletic trainers, coaches, Division Heads, and the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) to determine professional development needs and run those experiences. This includes: - Establishing a peer mentoring for new coaches to RCS.
- Reviewing and revising the coaching manual and resource library.
- Developing professional development opportunities, at times in partnership with outside organizations, to ensure a safe, positive athletic experience for all students. This includes development of a positive cultural environment on every team and in the athletic department in general.
- In partnership with all members of the Athletic Department, developing an action plan to ensure equity in all aspects of the program, particularly with regard to gender.
Evaluation: The Assistant AD is responsible for the evaluation of coaches This includes: - Regularly observing coaches to provide ongoing feedback.
- Ensuring that coaches submit a self-evaluation that incorporates their reflections on the season and considerations from end of season student reviews.
- Evaluating coaches based on rubrics that emphasize instruction, communication, safety, and positive team culture development.
Community Relationships: The Assistant AD works to build relationships with outside organizations and with Riverdale employees beyond the Athletic Department. This includes: - Establishing a partnership with local colleges/organizations for: coaching, contest management, internships, etc. (e.g. Manhattan College).
- Developing Faculty Enrichment Programs through athletics (i.e.: faculty coach for a day).
Additional Duties: In addition to their work focused on coach development, the Assistant AD contributes to the life of the school and to the operations of the department with the following responsibilities: - Acting as an advisor or homebase teacher for a group of MS or US students.
- Overseeing the grading and narrative writing process for all coaches at the end of each season.
- Working with department members to coordinate the logistics for overnight, in-season trips and for Spring Training Trips. This includes:
- Partnering with the Experiential Education team to align practices for trips.
- Communicating with parents, students, the Business Office, and third party travel organizations.
- Updating and sharing the Spring Trip Handbook for coaches.
- Working with the Director of Financial Aid to request funding for trips
- Organize and coordinate the logistics for overnight in season trips
Qualifications: The Assistant AD should have a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 3+ years of experience working in athletic administration in a school serving students in grades 6-12.
