Job Description The Head of Lower School is a highly visible community leader who works closely with the Head of School to oversee the wellbeing of the school and its community. This position is charged with the leadership and management, hiring, professional development, supervision and evaluation of Regis’ lower school faculty (kindergarten through fourth grade). In close partnership with the Head of School, this educational leader inspires and executes the academic vision for the school in support of the Sacred Heart mission. The Head of Lower School will promote and support excellent, engaged and student-centered faculty with a collaborative, collegial spirit. Through innovative teaching practices grounded in a research-based curriculum and a commitment to boys’ education, the Head of Lower School will help to prepare boys for future success. Utilizing the priorities of the current strategic plan, Shaping Our Future, the Head of Lower School will develop key performance indicators to improve student outcomes and teacher effectiveness. Primary duties and responsibilities Mission Leadership - Collaborates with the Head of School to envision and nurture a faculty community rooted in the mission of the school.
- Ensures the school’s mission is visible, developed, and nurtured.
- Actively supports the school’s mission; demonstrates an understanding of and enthusiasm for boys’ education.
- Supports faculty and staff to integrate the mission of the school throughout the educational and co-curricular program.
- Develops a program of discipline and student growth consistent with school’s mission.
- Provides opportunities for faculty and staff development.
- Works to create a diverse and inclusive school environment across all areas of school life.
- Builds community through informal interactions with students, families, faculty, staff, and friends of the school.
Academic Leadership - Assumes responsibility for the quality of instruction and execution of faculty duties, as well as the development and implementation of the school’s curricula.
- Coordinates with the early childhood and middle school heads when developing curriculum at grade level transitions.
- Actively builds strong communication with the faculty to support a spirit of equity, recognition and excellence in teaching.
- Develops a philosophy of ongoing professional development and allocates resources in coordination with the Head of School to support a culture of growth.
- Works with the faculty to promote and support instructional goals and provides consistent feedback in and out of the classroom.
- Leads a formative faculty evaluation process and solicits faculty input to improve performance.
- Communicates directly and honestly with parents and students to ensure a successful learning environment.
School Administration - Skilled in construction of coordinated division class schedules for faculty and students
- Manages the recruitment, hiring and mentoring of new faculty with the Head of School.
- Gathers faculty at organized and well managed meetings and training opportunities and leads regular division meetings.
- Serves as a member of Regis’ full administrative team and collaborates with colleagues on school-wide events.
- Ensures appropriate supervision of and support for administrative offices; implements clear policies and procedures effectively across all areas of school life.
- Supervises and participates in the development and implementation of faculty and staff professional development programs.
- Ensures compliance with accrediting agencies, as applicable, in the operation of the school.
- Oversees appropriate maintenance of school records.
- Ensures compliance with safety regulations; supports campus crisis response / communications plans to ensure safety of school community in partnership with the Head of School and Director of Communications and the Administrative Team.
- Maintains budget lines appropriate to the lower school program.
School Governance, Strategic Planning & Communication - Partners with the Head of School to achieve the school’s strategic plans, implement policies, and communicate effectively.
- Maintains effective communications within the school and with parents.
Qualifications and Qualities - Master of Arts, Master of Science or Master of Education degree
- Minimum of 3 years administrative experience
- Proven track record of directing and inspiring faculty members
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with students and adults
- History of collegiality and collaboration with other faculty and administrators
- Understanding of the developmental needs of boys from ages 5-10 years
- Vision and insight to guide curriculum growth and development
- Desire to actively support the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria
Preference will be given to candidates with the following credentials - Experience at independent schools
