Berkeley Academy: Director of the College Bound Program Berkeley Preparatory School seeks a committed, optimistic, kind, and tenacious professional with a passion for relationship building, social justice, college access, and creative thinking to serve as the founding Director of the College Bound Program for the Berkeley Academy. The Berkeley Academy is a signature academic enrichment and service program which serves Hillsborough County Public School students who attend the program during the summer and on weekends. The Berkeley Academy is dedicated to the mission of providing a supportive, enriching, and academically-rigorous college preparatory environment for highly motivated students from low-income households in our Tampa Bay community. Through Saturday and summer programming and by partnering with our scholars’ home schools, the Berkeley Academy ensures that students have the preparation, skills, and knowledge necessary to succeed in college and beyond. The Director of the College Bound Program will create and execute a program that guides our scholars and their families in all aspects of the college search and admissions process and will oversee all aspects of our College Bound Program (grades 9-12). The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, team-building, and organizational skills; the ability to facilitate a variety of high school enrichment programming; knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admissions policies, and financial aid policies and procedures; an exemplary ability to develop innovative strategies to meet challenges; and a growth mindset and unwavering belief that, with the right support, our scholars can reach their educational goals. At least two years of experience working with youth from educationally underserved populations and/or first-generation college students and helping them access educational opportunities is preferred. Berkeley Academy’s Director of the College Bound Program’s work includes, but is not limited to: - creating and directing the Berkeley Academy College Bound Program (grades 9-12)
- managing the college counseling process for our juniors and seniors (approximately 40 in each grade) which includes, but is not limited to, evening and weekend regular meetings to guide scholars and families through the college research, application, match, and financial aid processes to ensure college preparation and matriculation
- working with and traveling to partnering schools to monitor the academic performance and well-being of the scholars
- creating and implementing year-round college-readiness programming that meets the needs of the scholars and their families including a one-on-one College Advocate Support Program staffed by volunteers
- recruiting, training, and leading volunteers to serve in our College Bound Program
- creating and implementing College Bound programming and resources that include, but are not limited to, coordinating, creating, and teaching the college counseling seminar, overseeing the implementation of a grade 7-12 college counseling curriculum, creating and leading Saturday and summer programming for grades 9-12, and creating a College Bound resources website
- assisting families through programming, community partnerships, and individual support, with the education and completion of all financial-aid-related processes including, but not limited to, the FAFSA and CSS Profile.
- helping students write/revise college essays and applications
- preparing students for college interviews
- managing registration and preparation for college-entrance exams, including test preparation and fee waiver assistance
- identifying and helping students complete the application process for scholarships, fly-in programs, and other summer program opportunities
- planning and executing community-wide college-access events
- maintaining records and data on students
- engaging in on-going professional development, including membership in professional organizations, fly-in programs, workshops, and conferences, and more
- performing duties outside of the Berkeley Academy, which may include assisting in the college counseling process for Berkeley Preparatory School students, serving as the assistant test prep coordinator, teaching a class, and other duties as assigned
Compensation and Benefits: This position will have a start date of July 12, 2021 and is a full-time position with full benefits. The compensation package will be very competitive nationally and commensurate with experience, degree attainment, and the national independent school and college markets. The position requires a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends. Adjustments for reasonableness will be made.
