Blair Academy seeks a full-time Medical Director to manage the overall health of the school community and oversee the 24/7 operation of the J. Brooks Hoffman ’36 Health Center. The Medical Director will be tasked with providing unique perspectives on the health and safety of Blair’s 360 boarding and 100 day students, ensuring the strong and visible presence of the Health Center The Medical Director is responsible for all clinical, operational, technical, administrative, programmatic and personnel activities within the Health Center. The successful candidate will be a 12-month, exempt residential faculty member reporting directly to the Associate Head of School. The Medical Director must be a physician who is licensed to practice in the state of New Jersey and has experience in adolescent health. This leadership role includes assuming primary responsibility for identifying health issues, evaluating needs, and implementing and coordinating the healthcare of the Blair community. Responsibilities related to direct primary care of students: - Supervise and/or administer primary care; provide assessment, examination, follow-up care and referrals according to written medical directives; collect accurate health-related data.
- Collaborate with outside physicians, athletic trainers, school counselors and other health-service personnel in establishing diagnosis, plan of care and evaluation.
- Initiate counseling and health education to allow patients to cope with presenting issues, as necessary.
- Assume responsibility for follow-up services, such as laboratory work, tests and referrals to specialists and therapists, as well as respond to medical directives for referral of seriously ill patients to appropriate off-campus care.
- Routinely act as second-opinion consultant for nursing staff.
- Serve as a member of the Crisis Response Team to establish and communicate school protocols for emergent public health issues (e.g., SARS, H1N1, Ebola and COVID-19).
- Serve as a member of the counseling team and the monitors group.
- Make appropriate recommendations to the Associate Head of School regarding student assessment, counseling, medical leaves, and follow-up care and strategies.
- Maintain communication between school, parents and health professionals, coordinating provisions of health services for faculty, administrators and staff.
Responsibilities related to management of medical operations: - Oversee patient clinical areas.
- Ensure appropriate inventory of all medications, medical supplies and equipment. Regularly communicate with medical supply and pharmaceutical distributors. Order supplies as needed, within budgetary parameters.
- Oversee daily surveillance of emergency medical equipment and controlled substances.
- Oversee proper state and federal licensing for dispensary and medical waste transportation, ensuring compliance with the DEA and other agencies.
- Maintain updated policy and procedure manual.
- File county, state and federal reports on immunization and clinic licensure.
- Notify and file township, county and state forms for reportable communicable diseases.
- Initiate and maintain administrative functions of the Health Center through the use of information technology and electronic medical records as deemed appropriate by school administrators.
Other responsibilities: - Oversee the RN Supervisor in the hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluation of the nursing staff.
- Manage and maintain the professional certifications of both Health Center staff and contract healthcare providers who have contact with students, faculty and staff.
- Participate as a member of various school committees (not limited to those already mentioned in this job description).
- Develop easy-to-understand health-and-safety protocols and health-education materials for students and parents when necessary.
- Attend faculty meetings, monitor meetings and counseling group meetings.
- Perform additional duties as directed, including those related to health education and programming.
Qualifications: - MD with a minimum of 7 years of experience, preferably in pediatrics or family practice.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills.
- Results oriented with a high degree of initiative, judgment and discretion.
- Ability to lead and coach other professionals, while simultaneously functioning as a member of a collegial team.
- Proven ability to integrate priorities and deadlines.
- Must function well under pressure, with the ability to multitask, paying close attention to detail.
- Ability to deal well with uncertainty in a continually changing environment.
