The Dalton School, a progressive independent K-12 gender inclusive school in Manhattan, seeks a Middle School (Grades 4-8) Psychologist. The Dalton School has flourished in ways only imagined in 1919 when it was founded by Helen Parkhurst. Dalton is recognized as a national and international model of progressive education based upon a rigorous and challenging academic curriculum. Guided by the Dalton Plan, we are an intentionally diverse community committed to a tradition of life-long learning and educational innovation.
Job Duties
The Middle School Psychologist is an important member of the community, collaborates with a team of school psychologists and works with all constituents -- students, families, faculty, administration and staff. This person provides strategies of prevention, intervention, and remediation to assist others in developing effective coping skills and responses to their environments. Beyond working directly with students and student groups, the Middle School Psychologist is required to collaborate frequently with families, faculty, administrators, and other professionals in the school to strengthen connections between home and school for all students. This will include counseling, mentoring, and instructional services to help promote wellness by reinforcing strong communication, problem-solving, self-regulation or social skills.
In addition to coordinating outside referrals and collecting feedback from outside neuropsychological evaluations, the Middle School Psychologist is also involved in evaluating eligibility for learning accommodations, assessing standardized testing results, teaching parenting skills, making referrals to help coordinate community support, identifying standardized tests and learning support accommodations in concert with the Student Support Services team, implementing school-wide health and wellness initiatives and teaching lessons in collaboration with House and Health faculty and curricula.
An important member of the Middle School Administrative team, The Middle School Psychologist reports to the Division Director and collaborates with the other school psychologists and members of the Administrative team to set annual divisional goals and work toward a shared implementation of the School’s strategic plan.
We seek a professional with an understanding of the social and emotional development of children and adolescents, as well as familiarity with middle school curriculum and instruction. Candidates should believe in lifelong learning, scholarly inquiry, and problem solving in the context of an evolving body of professional knowledge. The ideal candidate:
- engages in culturally relevant, psychologically appropriate and evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions.
- demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural diversity and an understanding of persons in their environment.
- collaborates with students in discussing areas of difficulty, facilitating goal-setting and action plans.
- counsels parents and teachers to create restorative approaches to learning, behavioral, familial and social challenges
- uses quantitative and qualitative data to work with students, faculty, administration and families to support student social, emotional and academic goals
- fosters multicultural competency and inclusive learning and work environments
- brings knowledge of current school-based psychological intervention theory, research, and best practices
- designs, promotes and implements programs to reinforce a positive, mentally safe learning environment
- provides leadership in crisis situations
- enjoys working with students across a wide range of abilities and interests
- possesses exceptional organizational and communication skills
- collaborates with flexibility, optimism, and a sense of humor
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have had experience working in a school environment where primary responsibilities included consistent interaction, collaboration, psychotherapeutic intervention and problem solving with children, adolescents and adults. Additionally, the candidate should possess a track record of working constructively with diverse groups, cultures, developmental ages and levels of functioning to develop existing and potential strengths in service to the greater community.
This is a full-time role. Doctoral degree in clinical, counseling or school psychology required.
