Teachers seek to meet each child at her or his developmental level and challenge that child to discover the full range of his/her/their abilities.FSA offers small classes and individualized instruction that incorporates such essential themes of Friends education as silent reflection; inquiry-based learning; collaborative, experiential learning; and service learning to facilitate the kind of experiences that engender self awareness and respect for others. The curriculum is designed to inspire students to work for a more just society through activism and the building of coalitions across race, gender, sexual orientation, different abilities and class. Our curricula a...re designed to teach fundamental concepts and skills, using materials and methods that begin simply and grow in intellectual complexity and challenges for the students as they mature in years. For example, in science, students may use the same skills in different units and in successive years, but expectations of breadth, depth and performance are different.From an early age, children in The Friends School of Atlanta also receive opportunities to be of service to the community. Students have cleaned school grounds, planted flowers, cleaned river banks, created health-related coloring books for medical facilities, collected food for a local food bank and served as mentors to the children of Our House, a preschool program for families experiencing homelessness, among scores of other activities.We want our students to appreciate that knowledge and understanding open countless possibilities for their future. The Quaker peace testimony was conceived to remove the seeds of war. Quakers established Friends schools over 330 years ago to promote equality and democracy through education. In Atlanta, Quakers established the Atlanta Friends Meeting in part to support the Civil Rights Movement as fully committed activists, work that led to the founding of The Friends School of Atlanta in 1991 to be a model of diversity offering an educational program dedicated to equity and justice. Friends work toward realizing the dream of the Beloved Community continues.From our founding, FSA has taught American history through the lens of truth regarding the displacement of Native Americans, slavery and the structural racism that continues to shape American society to this day. This approach to teaching history not only illuminates the origins of entrenched inequality, but also seeks to inspire students to work for a more just society through activism and the building of coalitions across race, gender, sexual orientation, different abilities and class. Director of AdvancementThe Director of Advancement is responsible for the oversight of all programs related to fundraising, donor database management, marketing and communications. The Director of Advancement reports to the Head of School and serves as a member of the administrative leadership team.Job Responsibilities Fundraising Planning and Implementation – coordinate all capital, annual, endowment, and planned giving campaigns; collaborate closely with the Head of School and the Board to plan and implement all major gift solicitations involving individuals, foundations and corporations; oversee grant research, application and management; coordinate any consulting services for fundraising/development retained by the school. Messaging -- articulate the school’s mission, vision, values and pedagogy in order to cultivate prospective donors and market the school to the community at large. Make the case for philanthropic support for FSA to constituents, especially parents.Marketing Planning and Implementation -- develop and execute a marketing plan with consistent messaging and branding, in collaboration with the Director of Enrollment. Oversee the creation of advertisements, admissions collateral, social media campaigns, website content, press releases and related publications.Communications Management -- implement or oversee all communications to internal and external constituencies, including the weekly Late Quaking News newsletter, Friendly Light Magazine, special communications, press relations, etc.Alum Cultivation – serve as a liaison with alums and support alum engagement.Database Management – Oversee the management of the development database as a tool for analysis and planning as well as a way to maintain donor data, acknowledge gifts and generate timely reports.Volunteer Training and Coordination – help recruit and train campaign leadership and other volunteers to implement tasks essential to successful fundraising and marketing campaigns; Website Updates – Work with the Director of Technology to update the school website; PTA Event Planning and Coordination – Approve, monitor and support the implementation of all PTA fundraisers and public relations events; monitor/approve all solicitation of donors/sponsors to avoid donor overload; Other Events – develop events and programs that strengthen the school’s presence and relationships in and with the wider community; Strategic Plan – assist the Head in achieving the goals of the Strategic Plan; Committees – serve on the Development Committee and Finance Committee of the Board as well as at least one faculty/staff committee.Meetings and Events – Attend all Board meetings, faculty/staff meetings, FSPATA meetings and school community events to heighten awareness of the Advancement office as crucial to the school’s success and longevity; Candidate Qualifications The ideal candidate for the position of Director of Advancement will demonstrate: Personal endorsement of the school’s mission and values;Ability to cultivate and maintain appropriate relationships with with all members of the Friends School community, including donors, trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, students, families and other FSA friends;Experience leading efforts in fundraising, marketing and communications;Experience with annual giving, major gifts fundraising and capital campaigns;Excellent written and verbal communication skills;Ability to work collaboratively, meet deadlines and participate in creative problem solving;Knowledge of database applications, Google Drive applications and Microsoft Office skills.The position requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of professional development/marketing/communication experience, ideally in an independent school. After a short stint in politics in Washington, D.C., he relocated to New York City to better serve his community through the value of education instilled in him by his family. As he went on to lead his own classroom at Brooklyn Friends School, he began to introduce service and community activism to his students. Since then, he has taught in every grade except PreK and Kindergarten. As the founding Head of School at The Friends School of Atlanta, he helped to establish a standard of diversity, developmental education and experiential learning that has been essential to the community since 1991. Waman received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Plymouth State University and a Master of Art in Elementary Education from Long Island University.
