Teaching Responsibilities:
We believe that good teachers set high standards for their students and then do everything they can to help them achieve those standards. The Benjamin School is looking for teachers who will help our students become self-directed, independent learners with superior academic collegiate skills.
The ideal candidate will be able to incorporate multiple styles of teaching and use varied approaches with the students and material. This person must have a desire to work with students in a challenging, college-preparatory school environment and should possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
Qualified candidates should demonstrate a passion for English, a broad-based intellectual curiosity, the ability to work within a team, the skills and desire to engage and inspire students in the pursuit of learning, an understanding of the various roles that an independent school teacher must assume, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and a sense of humor.
The person filling this position should be comfortable teaching middle-school-level classes in all aspects of middle school English.
General Professional Qualifications:
The most desirable candidates will have the following background or comparable experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in English or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred;
- A strong background in the study of all aspects of Middle School English literature, grammar, speech, and writing;
- At least three years of teaching experience in a rigorous, college-preparatory program at the Middle School level is preferred;
- Experience in creating a student-centered learning environment and project-based learning, particularly projects with a STEM focus;
- Uses a variety of teaching methods to provide students with different ways of learning English;
- Demonstrates advocacy for students and their success as learners;
- Proficiency in the Google Suite and integrating technology into the curriculum;
- An ability and desire to teach and learn with peers in departmental and interdepartmental settings; and
- Interest and experience in interacting with students outside of the classroom in co-curricular activities: advisory, coaching, service work, etc.
