The Associate Teacher program at The Dalton School provides a unique opportunity for beginning teachers to further their teaching skills by working closely with experienced teachers and mentors in a progressive educational setting. Associate Teachers are integral to the First Program community. Duties include collaborating with the Head Teacher in all classroom responsibilities, both academic and organizational: planning and conducting small group or whole class lessons, assessing and documenting students’ needs, developing and participating in classroom management, and supporting the Head Teachers in the daily maintenance of the classroom. Associate Teachers must demonstrate sensitivity to and awareness of the many kinds of diversity present within the First Program community (cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, learning style, etc.), as well as the social and emotional developmental needs of the students.
As a full-time employee, the ideal Science Associate candidate has experience teaching science to young children and implementing an inquiry-based, experiential curriculum. Working collaboratively within a K-12 Science department, being invested in reflecting on one’s practice along with excellent communication skills, a passion for working with children and a positive attitude are essential. Candidates must demonstrate an investment in providing a learning experience that is equitable for all children through their lessons and in their communications with colleagues.
