The Associate Teacher program at The Dalton School provides a unique opportunity for new teachers to further their teaching skills by working closely with experienced teachers and mentors in a progressive educational setting. Associate Teachers are integral to the First Program community. Duties include collaborating with the Head Teacher in all classroom responsibilities, both academic and organizational: planning and conducting small group or whole class lessons, assessing and documenting students’ needs, developing and participating in classroom management, and supporting the Head Teachers in the daily maintenance of the classroom. Associate Teachers must demonstrate sensitivity to and awareness of the many kinds of diversity present within the First Program community (cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, learning style, etc.), as well as the social and emotional developmental needs of the students.
Qualifications
As full-time employees, Associate candidates must possess a passion and a promise for working with young children, excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching. Associates generally spend two years in First Program and are invited for a second year of teaching at the discretion of the school. Associate Teachers assist the Head Teacher with all day-to-day duties including lesson preparation and classroom set up. In addition to learning the craft of teaching by supporting the Head Teacher and assisting with classroom practices, Associate Teachers have additional responsibilities which include, but are not limited to:
- Planning and conducting small group or whole group lessons
- Assessing and documenting students’ needs
- Attending and participating in Curriculum Night, grade-level meetings, report conferences, student support meetings, Associate Teacher meetings and professional development
- Participating in conversations around curricular planning and classroom management
- Writing student progress reports each trimester
- Supervising lunch, recess, and dismissal duties?
- Other duties as assigned
Candidates should have:
- A commitment to ongoing learning about diversity, equity and inclusion, and justice initiatives
- Bachelor’s Degree and work towards an advanced degree in elementary education (required)
- Previous experience with Lower School students (preferred)
- Strong proficiency with technology is required
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong work ethic with the ability to learn new skills quickly
- Strong organizational and executive functioning skills
- Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are of special interest as our students learn Spanish starting in Kindergarten
- Demonstrate cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ease in effectively prioritizing multiple competing tasks and demands.
