Purpose Statement:
The Resident Dorm Supervisor is responsible for the safe and effective operation of their dorm floor managing the students and facilities, setting the tone for the dorm related to both the residential faculty and the students. The Resident Dorm Supervisor helps students and parents adjust to residential life’s complicated dynamics, being present and available for students. The Resident Dorm Supervisor is expected to live on campus and be a visible and active member of the school community. San Domenico School has approximately 130 students living on campus together with another eight to ten members of the residential staff. Other members of the residential staff live off-campus.
Responsibilities of a Resident Dorm Supervisor:
- Works closely with resident faculty, ensuring regular communication with boarding parents and often communicating directly with parents.
- Regarding student matters and concerns, the dorm supervisor also communicates regularly with the Upper School Associate Director and Director of Residential Life, school administrators, health center staff, and counselor.
- Takes part in the selection team to choose prefects each year. They also help manage the prefects in their dormitories and assist in their orientation and continued training.
- Assists in the campus-wide and dormitory orientation of new students with the other dorm parents’ and prefects’ assistance.
- Attends/assists with Community Curriculum/Programming
- Plans and runs the weekly night all-dorm floor meetings each week.
- Assists with the opening and closing of the dormitory at the beginning and end of the year
- Facilitates the mediation process for struggling roommates for their floor
- Partners with the Upper School Associate Director to investigate and respond to major school violations, including conducting room searches.
- Responds in an emergency or potentially dangerous situation for a student.
- Meets weekly with the Residential Life Leadership Team, resident faculty, prefects, and dormitory residents; including running their weekly floor meeting.
- Keeps morale high in the dorm and is willing to always take care of fellow dorm residents.
- The dorm supervisor is highly visible in the dormitory, performing frequent walkthroughs of the halls and common areas and impromptu visits to students in the dorm during the school days, weekends, and evening hours.
- Awareness of student resident grades, attendance, and behavior.
- During weekend duty, a Resident Dorm Supervisor may be the team leader for that weekend
- Works regular (may be day, weeknight or weekend) shifts as scheduled by the Director of Residential Life.
- Knows and enforces the rules as listed in both the Boarding Program Student Handbook and Resident Faculty handbook
- Maintains all necessary certificates and licenses as required by law or the School, at its discretion, as conditions to Residence Life Faculty’s position and/or the performance of one or more essential functions of the position
- Available for late-night emergencies; some overnight or late-night duties both scheduled (e.g. await expected late returning students) and unexpected (e.g. assist with emergencies, help with sick/injured students)
- Furthers the mission of the school by undertaking every reasonable step and opportunity to create and maintain a learning environment that promotes intellectual curiosity, academic challenge, personal growth, personal accountability, tolerance, self-initiative and community service and involvement
- Fosters a culture where students learn independence and self-awareness that prepares them for college and beyond
- Fosters an environment where integrity and respect for self and others is paramount.
- Checks in with students and makes themselves available to listen and offer a healthy, supportive adult presence
- Keeps up to date on duty logs - reading and understanding logs from the previous shifts and then writing detailed logs so that all resident faculty are up to speed with what has transpired
- Available to be on duty for all events associated with both the opening and closing weekends (“all-hands” weekends) of the school year
- Holds onto the dorm phone one night per week.
- Ensures safety and wellbeing of all residents
- Attends Community Dinner weekly when possible
- Administers prescription and over the counter medications as needed and communicates with health services
- Drives students in school vans to trips, appointments and excursions
- Possible additional holiday duties each semester. Responsibilities may include departure and arrival for major holidays, checking students out or in, or driving shuttles to and from transportation hubs
- Occasional weekend special events, supervision or extra driving
- May be required to work while students are on campus, including during School Breaks (partial or full break), may include holidays (year round position).
- Knows emergency protocols in the emergency preparedness manual and is able to respond appropriately.
- Ensures that boarding schedules and curfews are being met and followed
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and academic experience preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent computer proficiency (iPad, Mac computer, Gmail/Google Drive, MS Office – Word/Excel).
- Ability to get along in a community setting
