Science Program Description

At The Frances Xavier Warde School, our elementary science program is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences and investigations in life science, physical science and earth science topics at each grade level. The science teacher utilizes inquiry units to facilitate understanding of how science interplays with other disciplines. Through the curriculum students develop skills in observation, measurement, classification and collection of data.

Primary Function

The elementary science teacher is responsible for educating the whole child by providing a quality learning experience to all children in his/her classroom. The teacher must possess the knowledge and theory to instruct in the content area while using age appropriate methods and procedures. The science teacher is also utilized as a resource for lower grade inquiry units completed in the classroom.

Key Relationships

The Intermediate Years Teacher reports to the Principal and is evaluated, supervised and mentored by the Principal and or Assistant Principal. Other key relationships s/he include the Head of School, other FXW faculty members, staff, students and parents.

Qualifications and Requirements A candidate should hold:

• A Bachelors or Masters Degree in Education with a major or minor in Science

• A current State of Illinois teaching certificate Type 03/Type 04

• Endorsement in Science preferred

• A Masters Degree in the content area is preferred

A candidate will need upon hiring:

• Compliance with Archdiocese of Chicago Protecting God's Children guidellnes

• TB test

A candidate must demonstrate:

• The ability to establish collaborative relationships with teaching staff

• Familiarity with ISACS criteria and standards of excellence
