Middle School Math Teacher
Belmont Day School seeks a dynamic, skilled, and creative math teacher to teach middle school math in grades six, seven, and eight, serve as an advisor, and collaborate with a collegial and skilled team of faculty.
As a teacher and advisor, this person will serve as an integral member of the middle school grade-level teams and math department. Deep knowledge of and appreciation for teaching mathematics, including knowledge of number properties, decimals, fractions, percent, measurement, statistics, geometry, order of operations, ratio, number theory, probability, algebraic thinking, basic trigonometry, linear equations, systems and inequalities, polynomials, quadratic functions, graphing inequalities, radical and rational functions, and exponential functions are required. A qualified candidate will also possess a strong enthusiasm, deep knowledge of, and familiarity with middle school students and a commitment to fostering and modeling our core values, in addition to the ability to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into their pedagogy and treatment of students, parents, and colleagues.
This is a full-time, ten-month, exempt and benefit-eligible position, which reports to the middle school head and begins September 2022. This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored relocation.
Responsibilities
- Teach three sections of middle school math
- Serve as a middle school advisor
- Create and deliver rigorous, effective, and compelling curricular experiences
- Work to ensure academic excellence (the ability of students to approach novel tasks with the confidence, mindset, and skills to accomplish them successfully)
- Collaborate with teams of colleagues to support co-curricular programming and the development of adolescents beyond the classroom
- Run a middle school club
- Serve in one or more roles: Capstone mentor, middle school athletics coach, health and wellness teacher, Choices teacher, and/or associate teacher mentor
- Keep careful anecdotal and assessment records to write comprehensive student reports
- Constructively participate in professional evaluation program
- Lead and assist in parent-teacher conferences focused on the social, emotional, and academic growth of middle school students
- Provide regular, constructive, and specific feedback to students to encourage their growth and improvement as mathematicians
- Establish and maintain strong home-school partnerships with families to ensure students’ success
- Commit to fostering an equitable and inclusive community both in and outside of the classroom
- Engage with students routinely by providing coverage at lunch, recess, dismissal, or other duties as needed
- Perform additional responsibilities as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Experience teaching this developmental age group
- Experience teaching math
- Experience with problem-based curriculum (i.e. Illustrative Math or Open Up Resources), including Algebra 1
- Outstanding organizational skills
- Deep appreciation for and commitment to building a cohesive and innovative community of learners
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to develop thematic curriculum and appropriate pacing and scope and sequence of curriculum in order to meet the needs of students
- Commitment to professional development and best practices in teaching
- Clear understanding and dedication to equity and inclusion and infusing anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogy
- Commitment to effective use of technology in the classroom
- A sense of humor, flexibility, energy, patience, and creativity
