The Dalton School, a progressive independent K-12 gender inclusive school in Manhattan seeks a Middle School Math Teacher and 8th Grade House Advisor for the 2022-2023 school year.
Our Middle School encompasses Grades 4-8. Math in Grades 4 & 5 is taught in heterogeneous classrooms with the House Advisor as co-teacher. Math 6 is also taught in heterogeneous groups and tracking begins in 7th Grade in our Algebra 1 Course. Responsibilities of this position would include teaching multiple sections of Grade 8 Math (Algebra 1 & 2), working with individual and small groups of students in weekly Lab periods, meeting with the Middle School Math Department, and potentially coaching the Grade 8 math team.
House is a core principle of The Dalton Plan, and consequently an important element of the student journey. House Advisors serve as the primary contact for students and families. The person in this position would also serve as a Grade 8 House Advisor, working with a group of 8th graders to shepherd their social and emotional development, create community, and advocate on behalf of individual students and their learning needs. House Advisors collaborate as an 8th grade team to develop House curriculum on grade-specific topics and community building programs.
The ideal teacher enjoys inquiry and insights by a broad range of math learners and is familiar with curricular innovations to enhance math learning beyond traditional methods. We seek teachers passionate and knowledgeable about progressive middle school mathematics education, problem-based teaching and learning and differentiation. The MS Math Department is committed to reflecting upon its curriculum and there will be opportunities to innovate and possibly incorporate the study of probability, statistics, and geometry in the curriculum.
Master’s degree in education or mathematics, in addition to teaching similar math content, is strongly preferred. Experience with teaching middle school and knowledge of mathematics content through Precalculus are also preferred.
Dalton is recognized as a national and international model of progressive education based upon a rigorous and challenging academic curriculum. Guided by the Dalton Plan, we are an intentionally diverse community committed to a tradition of life-long learning and educational innovation. The Dalton School actively seeks to forward the equity and diversity of our community in our admissions, programs, and hiring. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, ethnic origin, age, physical disability or sexual orientation in administration of our educational policies, hiring policies, admissions policies, financial aid programs, athletics and other school-administered programs.
