Georgetown Day School, an independent school in Washington, D.C., seeks a Lower and Middle School Innovation and Computer Science Teacher for the 2022-2023 School Year. Rich content, creative pedagogy and authentic relationships are essential components of a GDS classroom. Four primary responsibilities:
- Respecting, caring for, and enjoying the company of young people
- Teaching GDS’s innovation and computer science curriculum to students across grades PK - 8, often in partnership with other classroom teacher
- Serving as a dedicated and engaged Middle School advisor for a group of ~10 Middle School students
- Being a trusted voice, teacher coach and inspiration for the powerful and purposeful integration of technology into teaching and learning
The Innovation and Computer Science teacher will design lessons, units, projects, and classroom activities to teach computer science principles and computational skills to GDS’s lower and middle school students. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with teaching computer science, information literacy and media production within an inquiry-based framework. They will work to share that knowledge with our students through engaging, meaningful, and relevant experiential learning activities.
The ideal candidate for this position will be flexible, energetic, interested in constantly learning new ways of teaching and conveying the essentials of a rapidly evolving field, and most of all eager to infuse joy into students’ academic life in equitable and meaningful ways.
Principle duties include:
- Serve as co-lead designer and teacher of GDS’s signature Middle School innovation programs, Hopper Studio and Hopper Quest
- Collaborate with teachers to develop curricula that emphasizes technology literacy skills and capacities
- Participate as an advisor for ~10 5th grade students
- Provide in-house professional development for teachers to integrate technology effectively into their practice to enhance the student experience
- Provide curricular structure and inspiration for teachers whose students are participants in GDS’s 1:1 iPad and Chromebook programs
- Build networks with students and families to ensure effective communication regarding the school’s computer literacy and innovation curriculum

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A B.S. in computer science, engineering, architecture or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
- 5 or more years of innovative teaching experience, rich with creativity, technology, and student-centered practice in an elementary or middle school environment.
- Experience teaching computer science/computational thinking to elementary or middle school students.
- Experience with robotics and electronics.
- Interest and experience in computer science, coding, and programming.
- Interest and experience in the “maker arts,” DIY and fabrication.
- ???????Expertise in project-based learning and inquiry-driven learning framework.
- Experience with contemporary learning technologies including Google Workspace, Blackbaud, Hapara, ClassLink, Flipgrid, Kahoot, VoiceThread, PearDeck, etc.
- The ability to both collaborate and work independently to create engaging and immersive classroom activities.
