Job Summary: This teaching position serves the purpose of running a program for students in grades 10-12 that focuses on improving student outcomes by supporting their social-emotional learning needs and improving school climate. The Health, Wellness and Leadership Teacher will be responsible for creating and implementing a curriculum that teaches communication skills as well as health-related topics, including fitness, nutrition, healthy habits, sex education, stress and anxiety management, and leadership skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create an entire curriculum and teach Health, Wellness and Leadership to groups of students from all abilities across grades 10 – 12.
- Responsible for five classes per semester, while developing new and innovative ways of teaching said classes.
- Take into account the differing ability of lessons taught to students and differentiates work accordingly.
- Encourage all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets.
- Guarantee that all students are known by name and that the classroom atmosphere is positive at all times.
- Deal with inappropriate behavior quickly and effectively according to the school’s behavioral policy, as set fourth in the employee and student handbooks.
- Check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of students.
- Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and assessments via online grade book.
- Attend scheduled meetings with the School, department, and Dean of Faculty.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the department to formulate plans, which are coherent and relevant to the needs of the individual students and to the aims and objectives of Forman.
- Help develop class resources and keep well up to date with safety issues and regulations.
- Be involved in the school community at large, and participate in events.
- Recognize that objective assessments of student performance are important tools that must be used in concert with deep, analytical thinking assignments to assess student understanding.
- Demonstrate depth of content knowledge of skills in their field.
- Become a role model for continuous learning to students, parents, peers and supervisors.
- Utilize activities to assist with helping students with stress management, leadership skills, healthy life style choices, and sex education.
- Other duties as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES: Including but not limited to, coaching, dorm coverage, student advising, night/weekend duties, and lead or assist in clubs or other activities.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years experience required, Master’s preferred.
- Communication Skills: You must be able to speak clearly to students, other teachers, parents and administration officials.
- Instruction Skills: You will have to explain new ideas and unfamiliar concepts with authority and in a clear and concise way so that students can understand. You must work to keep the students' attention.
- Writing Skills: Teachers write progress reports, talk with parents by email or phone conversation. Writing skills are critical.
- Creativity: Teachers have to find ways to involve students into their lessons. Additionally, teachers may have to work with different learning styles to get the most out of each student.
- People Skills: Engaging parents and creating healthy relationships with students and faculty will help create a quality learning environment.
