THE POSITION
Hawken School seeks a collaborative, perceptive person who is capable of relating to individuals at all levels within the organization. The Human Resources Business Partner will be based primarily on the Lyndhurst (toddler - Grade 8) campus and will run the daily functions of the Human Resources team as well as lead and direct the routine functions of the Human Resources department including onboarding, administering benefits and leave, assisting with pay practices, handling insurance and enforcing school policies and practices. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Human Resources Operations and Compliance
- Implement process documents and proper procedures for HR functions
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations as well as recommended best practices
- Maintain physical and/or digital files for all employees as well as their documents, benefits, and attendance records
- Maintain a deep knowledge of best practices and regulatory changes
- Perform routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs, including but not limited to compensation and benefits, leaves of absences, performance and talent management, and training and development
- Conduct all investigations relating to employee relation issues, partner in progressive discipline and termination decisions, conduct and maintain documentation for exit interviews
- Gather information for and partner with Hawken’s chief talent officer to formulate responses to Hawken senior leaders and EEOC and FLSA issues
Recruiting and Onboarding
- Support the vision, mission, and guiding principles of the school
- Implement all new hire orientation as well as employee recognition programs
- Assist hiring teams with background checks as well as employee eligibility verifications
- Assist teams with recruiting, interviewing, and facilitating the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions, enlisting the use of external help as needed.
- Collaborate with managers to understand skills and competencies required for job openings
- Write and post job descriptions and track posting costs
- Create an onboarding plan for new employees to review HR policies as well as internal procedures and regulations
- Identify and analyze trends in compensation and benefits; research and propose competitive base and incentive pay programs to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent
Benefits and Compensation
- Work closely with Hawken’s vendors (third party administrators, insurance carriers, workers compensation, unemployment, etc.) and establish effective working relationships in order to ensure Hawken and its employees receive the best service.
- Support administration with the evaluation of employee performance and pay scale review
Performance Management and Employee Relations
- Generate internal documents such as offer letters, appointment letters, salary information, performance plans, and warning or probation letters
- Review and document compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and performance management assessments. This may include safety trainings, licensure renewal and maintenance, or certifications
- Track and support DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice) initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS
- Five or more years in a human resource generalist capacity
- A bachelor’s degree is highly preferred
- Prior experience in handling negotiation and conflict resolution
- Strong knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations
- Proficiency with or ability to learn new HRIS and talent management systems
- Demonstrated success in accuracy of detailed work, high level of productivity, organization, and a sense of urgency
- Commitment to building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
