At The Benjamin School, we believe that good teachers set high standards for their students and then do everything they can to help them achieve those standards. We are looking for teachers who will help our students become self-directed, independent learners with superior academic skills.
The ideal candidate will be able to incorporate several styles of teaching and use varied approaches to the students and material. This person must have a desire to work with students in a challenging, college-preparatory environment and should possess strong interpersonal and written communications skills.
Qualified candidates should demonstrate a passion for computer science, an intellectual curiosity, strong communication skills, the ability to work within a team, skills to engage and inspire students in the pursuit of learning, and a commitment to ongoing professional development. Experience teaching the AP curriculum is also highly desirable.
The computer science teacher will teach sections of AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles, in addition to electives in game design and an Introduction to Computer Science course. There is also the opportunity to teach courses and lead extracurricular activities in robotics and engineering, depending upon the individual talents that the candidate brings to Benjamin.
General Professional Qualifications:
The most desirable candidates will have the following background or comparable experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or mathematics is required;
- Preferably, three years or more of teaching experience in a rigorous, college-preparatory program at the Upper School level;
- Strong educational background in computer science and/or engineering–an advanced degree in one of these areas is preferred;
- Experience integrating technology into the curriculum;
- A willingness to create a student-centered classroom;
- A willingness to work as part of a team with the Arts and Innovation Department;
- Collegiality and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues on advancing the school’s strategic initiatives is essential; and
- An interest and experience in interacting with students outside of the classroom in co-curricular activities: sports, arts, social service, etc.
Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
