Job Title: Coordinator of Innovation Lab
Division: Upper School
Reports to: Head of Upper School and Director of Technology Integration and Innovation
Summary: King is seeking a full-time Coordinator of our Innovation Lab. This exciting and strategic position will partner with faculty across all grade levels and disciplines to support and champion King’s commitment to STEM education and the development as a premier research and inquiry institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach Innovation Lab classes as needed.
- Advise at least one related student club.
- Participate in Department and Division team meetings.
- Communicate with parents/guardians on student progress.
- Provide additional help to students as needed.
- Attend professional development workshops to further knowledge and skill in implementing new course offerings as they develop.
- Participate in the review and update current curriculum with the latest topics and technologies.
- Collaborate with the Science and Math departments to develop integrated inquiry-based projects that may also make use of the Innovation Center/MakerSpace.
- Cultivate curiosity, creativity, innovation, and agency through a myriad of activities that include, but are not limited to, making, hacking, redesigning, and tinkering.
- Foster self-reliance and risk-taking with safety as the priority.
- Develop innovative programming for Lower School, Middle School and Upper School students - both during and outside of the school day/year, including but not limited to open lab periods and King School Summer Institute.
- Build relationships across departments that result in interdisciplinary and project-based learning.
- Provide ad-hoc teaching support.
- Ensure a safe, actively monitored, and well-maintained innovation lab.
- Teach elective courses as needed and be responsible for an advisory.
- Ability and willingness to encourage student discovery and autonomy of thought.
Requirements:
- University degree in at least one of the following areas: science, engineering, architecture, visual arts, industrial arts, and/or graphic design. Preference given to those with expertise in multiple categories.
- Possess a sound understanding of the developmental stages of middle school and upper school students.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues effectively and collegially.
- Experience using tools and technology creatively, especially fabrication technologies such as 3D printers, CO2 lasers, CNC routers, and general woodshop tools and machinery.
- Passionate about teaching and problem solving.
- Ability to create programming and teach in an interdisciplinary setting.
- Adept at managing a dynamic, student-centered classroom.
- Demonstrated capacity in culturally responsive professional practices, excellent communication skills, and ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues.
- Demonstrated capacity to thrive in our diverse community, including but not limited to diversity in race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, ability/disability, belief, sexual orientation, and national origin according to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles.
