The position is a full-time (100%) annual position that comprises both teaching and coordination responsibilities. This role reports to the Middle School Division Head. This individual works closely with the Dean of Teaching and Learning, Educational Leaders, and teachers.
Job Summary
A significant percentage of this role is comprised of teaching visual arts. Some teaching of drama and/or music is an option based on the candidate profile. The coordination responsibility spans the Pre-K to 8, with an emphasis on supporting drama and music teachers, and art projects with Lower School. The coordinator announces, facilitates, and helps organize projects, exhibitions, and performances at the lower and middle school level. The role also includes teaching assignments, and participation in teacher planning and collaboration.
The Arts Teaching Program responsibilities include:
- Teach all students
- Prepare classes, participate in curriculum development and harmonization with colleagues
- Supervise all students during teaching times
- Supervise students during recesses and lunches assigned
- Participate in meetings
- Participate in events
- Participate in student life
- Hold an advisory role
All duties above are included in the teacher and coordinator contract. A schedule of meetings is provided to teachers.
More specifically, in addition to the general FASPS Teacher Job Description, the Secondary Art Teacher will
- Align teaching to French National Education competencies
- Harmonize French National Education competencies with colleagues of other subject areas, with regard for Art History components
- Have an interest in teaching in a bilingual, multicultural environment
- Put in place class management and project organization
- Incorporate positive discipline strategies and/or restorative practices
- Stay informed of current trends in art and share them with students, inspiring innovation
- Impart a personal passion for the creation of art
- Rely on knowledge of pedagogical practices to differentiate, engage in portfolio work, interdisciplinary learning and learn in mixed age groups
- Use varied assessment models adapted to the subject of art, and according the FASPS Assessment Policy, respecting guidelines and deadlines for assessing and reporting
- Support colleagues with artistic endeavors and performances
- Observe colleagues, providing coaching and feedback to support their development
- Facilitate whole school art projects, exhibitions, and days
- Communicate with families through a variety of forums
- Organize field trips to discover art within Seattle area, and beyond
- Participate in overnight trips annually
- Leverage technology in the classroom
- Show engagement in collaboration and teamwork
- Maintain student safety when using art tools and materials
- Maintain order and cleanliness of art space and storage, placing orders to keep stock in place
- Ability to do the duties assigned
Qualifications:
Required language: English with fluent French preferred
The ability to be employed in the United States and to pass a background check are required.
French secondary certification preferred.
A minimum of 3 to 5 years working in arts within varied settings is required. Applicants should have some Middle School teaching experience, a desire to be part of an internationally diverse community of teachers and learners, with a willingness to adapt to the unique program at FASPS. Successful candidates will be passionate about working with students, have knowledge of current educational practices and strategies and be able to use flexible and innovative pedagogical techniques appropriate to a variety of learning styles. A respect and promotion of bilingual education is required.
