POSITION SUMMARY
Albuquerque Academy, a co-ed, independent, college preparatory day school, seeks a counselor who will join a dynamic team of four licensed mental health professionals in July 2021. This team works in a variety of ways to promote the mental health and well-being of students at the school. The counselor will work closely with students, parents, faculty, and staff in key areas: crisis intervention, short-term individual counseling, facilitating support groups, psychoeducation, referrals to therapists in the community, and consultation with the department and community partners. Perspective candidates need to possess a relationship based and trauma informed approach. The counselor will work collaboratively with faculty, administration, parents, and community partners in the development of a school-wide SEL program. Prospective candidates need to be skilled and willing to train faculty and parents on topics related to the social emotional development of adolescents and work with parents on the development of parenting skills and during time when their children are in distress.
Currently, health classes are offered in grades eight and ten, where counselors are responsible for delivering and improving the health curriculum. The curriculum covers topics such as clarification of values, sexuality, substance abuse, developing healthy relationships, managing stress, and coping with anxiety and depression. Additionally, counselors present, sometimes in the evening, to faculty and parents on issues relevant to adolescent development and wellbeing.

Essential Functions
- Provides short term counseling and crisis interventions to students as needed
- Assists staff with the creation and alignment of classroom student behavioral expectations and classroom management plans
- Works with teachers in tracking, counseling, and assisting struggling students
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators regarding students with identified concerns and needs
- Refers students who have ongoing emotional issues to qualified psychologists or licensed social workers
- Acts as the school liaison with students’ outside mental health professionals
- Provides appropriate information to faculty and staff regarding students’ specific emotional needs and mental health, as appropriate
- Engages in ongoing professional development relevant to the position
- Supports the School and its mission, always maintaining a high degree of professionalism
- Remains abreast of current laws and ethical standards as they relate to student safety and emotional health; assist in ensuring school compliance with said laws and standards
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is primarily indoors in a classroom or office setting.
- Hours are generally from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. from August to early June.
- Extracurricular, administrative, or other chaperoning/sponsoring duties may take place outdoors and may extend into the late afternoon/evening or weekends.

EDUCATION
- Master’s degree or higher
- Licensure to practice as a master’s level clinician
EXPERIENCE
- 5 years post-masters or 3 years postdoctoral experience
- Experience working clinically with adolescents, ages 12-18
- Experience working with parents on topics related to the wellbeing of their children
- Previous work in a school setting and teaching experience.
