Brandon Hall School seeks an experienced and dynamic Middle and Upper School English Teacher for the 2022-23 school year. The full-time position starting August 1, 2022 will include teaching Middle and Upper School English courses with the potential for teaching and/or proposing electives.
The ideal candidate will have independent and/or boarding school teaching experience, demonstrate excellent technology and communication skills, and have a strong desire to contribute to school life beyond the classroom. There are also opportunities for the candidate to coach school athletics and be a residential faculty member and reside in campus housing.

English Teaching Responsibilities
- Focus on developing the ability to perform competent literary analysis through the recognition and understanding of appropriate literary terms and devices from a variety of genres.
- Advance the understanding of basic literary elements with an emphasis on short stories, drama, poetry, and novels.
- Initiate and develop a solid working knowledge of the mechanics of standard and creative writing.
- Stay current and use a variety of instructional technologies to enhance student learning, engagement, and discussions.
General Teaching Duties and Responsibilities
Curriculum and Instruction:
- Create and implement lesson plans in accordance with established course curriculum; written evidence of preparation is required.
- Use a variety of instructional techniques to enhance student learning and adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities.
- Work with the department chair and other faculty members to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
- Use instructional technologies to enhance the curriculum and to create a more collaborative and/or efficient student learning experience.
- Design lessons and projects that foster an interactive learning environment centered around main learning goals, specific and timely feedback, and student-produced content.
- Facilitate and inspire highly effective 21st Century Skills in each student, such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity through the use of clearly defined rubrics, discussion, and reflection.
- Uphold and adhere to all school policies and procedures.
Student Growth and Development:
- Conduct ongoing formative assessments of student understanding in order to provide timely feedback to students and guide instruction.
- Help students develop appropriate study methods and habits.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities through faculty sponsorship or as assigned.
- Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of Brandon Hall School.
Classroom Management:
- Create and cultivate a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Manage student behavior through a shared understanding of fair and equitable class rules, procedures, and consequences.
Professional Learning and Development:
- Participate in faculty learning and development activities to improve the craft of teaching; including required faculty in-service and on-campus sessions and independent opportunities.
- Establish and reflect on teacher goals and uphold proficient levels of practice in the areas of curriculum and instruction.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on faculty and staff committees.
Professionalism and Communication:
- Use appropriate oral and written communication with colleagues, students, parents, and the school community in accordance with school policies and procedures.
- Communicate with parents in a respectful and timely manner per the parent communication guidelines to share student progress and class updates.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and the school community.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- 3+ years teaching experience strongly preferred
- Experience with International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum preferred
- Experience with coaching school athletics preferred
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and development
