High School Learning Specialist
Compass High School is seeking a Learning Specialist to join our faculty for the 2022-23 school year. Compass is a nonprofit private school specializing in the education of students with learning differences. Our school is truly a unique and rewarding place for teachers to work with complex students. The mission of Compass High School is to provide a supportive, individualized program to help students develop their full academic potential. We focus on learning strategies, social competence, and self-advocacy to give students the knowledge and self-confidence they need to succeed. Compass is a small school with a high level of cohesion and collaboration among its faculty. This position will be located at our new campus in Belmont starting Fall 2022.
Position Overview:
The Learning Specialist collaborates with the school’s senior leadership and faculty and is responsible for overseeing student support and remediation. The Learning Specialist will teach a Reading Skills class and a Math Skills class as well as provide one-to-one educational therapy to a small caseload of students. Experience teaching students with learning differences is required. Part-time or full-time position with benefits package available.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement reading remediation in a small group setting for students with dyslexia and other reading disorders.
- Provide individual plans to a caseload of students who require intensive support to be successful in high school classes.
- Utilize assessment data to plan instruction and to document progress.
- Participate as school representative for IEP meetings and in regular staff meetings, as required.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Communicate, facilitate and lead across stakeholders in an integrated approach to our strengths-focused learning support.
- Provide direct support for students, individually or in groups, to help them understand their strengths and strategies, partnering with them in goal setting and advocacy.
Qualifications:
- Finds resonance with Compass High School’s mission and philosophy.
- Certification as a Learning Specialist, an advanced degree (e.g. in Reading or Special Education), or a teaching credential is desired.
- Training in reading remediation.
- Experience working with students with specific learning disabilities.
- Experience providing consultation and training to educators or other professionals.
- Excellent communication skills: clear, articulate, professional in speaking and writing.
- Is an enthusiastic self-starter with a can-do attitude.
