Lowell School, a progressive school of 350 students in NW Washington, DC, is currently seeking applicants for a full-time Middle School Counselor. This role consults and collaborates with teachers, families, and administrators to meet the social/emotional needs of individuals and groups of students from 6th through 8th grade. The ideal candidate will possess strong characteristics of emotional intelligence and a demonstrated ability to support students and families during times of social-emotional vulnerability.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Director of Middle School and the Student Support Team to observe students, meet with teachers, identify student social, emotional, and behavioral needs, and provide follow-up communication and planning.
- Create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration between faculty and parents in order to enhance student learning and metacognitive growth by serving as an initial point of contact for teachers, parents, and their students who require social-emotional support.
- Create and monitor supportive plans in collaboration with families, teachers, and outside professionals when needed.
- Serve as coach to parents and teachers by providing 1:1 support and planning, coordinating, and arranging or presenting educational opportunities each year about the stages of child and early adolescent development.
- Facilitate conversations of a social and/or emotional nature with students, both individually and in small groups
- Develop and implement proactive classroom guidance curriculum and activities on a regular basis (including peer relationships, communication skills, small group coaching work, coping skills, problem-solving and decision-making, conflict resolution, etc.).
- Provide crisis intervention and short-term support for students, families, and faculty.
- Maintain accurate yearly records and ensure confidentiality of all student data according to the law and school protocols.
