Job Title: Upper School Biology and Environmental Science Teacher

Division: Upper School

Reports to: Head of Upper School and Science Department Chair

Summary:

King School is looking for a full-time Upper School Biology and Environmental Science Instructor to teach and develop our courses related to life, environmental, and earth and space science. The ideal candidate for this position has a background in teaching and developing life and/or environmental science courses at the high school level and has an education related to biology, environmental science, and/or earth and space science. Ideal candidates should have an understanding and appreciation of high school student development, act as the teacher advisor of the Environment Club, and help develop an elective course in Earth and Space Science. Additionally, this candidate should create an inclusive and equitable learning environment, be proficient in the language and practices of the Next Generation Science Standards, and channel and develop local, project-based learning opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute curricula that improve scientific skills, techniques and practices, such as designing and interpreting models and developing arguments from evidence.
• Develop and execute curricula that improve mastery of cross-cutting scientific concepts, such as cause and effect, and structure and function.
• Develop and execute curricula that reflect the most current, NGSS-inspired discipline content (specifically related to Life Science and Earth Space Science).
• Develop and execute curricula that reflect the most current and applicable tools of scientific instrumentation and analysis, including relevant quantitative analysis software (such as Vernier, Graphical Analysis, and PASCO), Google Platforms (Classroom, Meets, Sheets, Docs, Jamboard) and flipped classroom technologies (such as Zoom, Loom, Flipgrid, etc.).
• Design and execute curricula that upholds the value of creative problem-solving in a real-world context that affirms and develops students’ sense of stewardship, agency and personal investment in their immediate, accessible local environment.
• Design and execute curricula that uphold the DEI goals of the department and the school.
• Organize and set up displays of student work that highlight process and learning, including maintaining digital work spaces and file structures.
• Collaborate with the inter- and cross-divisional members of the Science Department to teach our inquiry-based, student-centered curriculum using vertical sequencing and backward design.
• Create a classroom that presents a warm, well-structured, and organized learning environment that encourages and supports intellectual risk-taking and growth, with consistent routines and expectations for the students and for one’s self.
• Contribute to a department-wide collaborative plan for materials’ management.
• Maintain all support and communication duties of an active teacher, including daily correspondences, providing timely grades and feedback, collaborative maintenance of student profiles, participation in parent meetings, and writing student comments.

Requirements:

• BA, BS, MA, MS or PhD related to Biology, Environmental Science, Geoscience and/or Earth and Space Science.
• A.T. or Ed. D. preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years teaching High School experience preferred.
• Possess a sound understanding of the intellectual and social-emotional developmental stages of adolescents from the ages of 14-18.
• Experience and connections (or a willingness to develop them) with local agencies, institutions, and initiatives oriented around environmental education and stewardship.
• Demonstrated capacity in culturally responsive professional practices, strong communication skills, and ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues.
• Demonstrated capacity to thrive in a diverse community.
• Must have a demonstrated alignment with King’s Mission and Virtues.
