JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective

The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes), a Spanish immersion school in Austin, Texas, has an opening for a Middle School Science Teacher (6th Grade- 8th Grade). The Science Teacher is responsible for creating a quality learning environment where students can develop the values and principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile that are at the heart of learning and relationships in the school. 

Essential Functions

• Plan and teach Science lessons following the IB MYP Science curriculum framework.
• Differentiate for individual student needs and support students. 
• Use a wide range of technologies and creative teaching styles. 
• Regularly contribute to curriculum planning and development including interdisciplinary units of work. 
• Plan with colleagues to deliver effective team teaching when possible. 
• Attend regular curriculum planning and student progress meetings. 
• Communicate students' progress toward realizing academic development goals.
• Collaborate with Middle School teachers to offer an outstanding IB Middle Years Program and Magellan educational experience.

Essential Functions As It Relates To:

Students 

• Promote high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
• Improve student performance. 
• Serve as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession. 
• Ensure that the instructional programs engage the learner in inquiry-based tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, questioning the known, problem solving and creativity, utilizing the scientific method, and that they address the range of skills and developmental needs found in the classroom. 
• Encourage students to define individual goals, develop personal agency, and explore voice. 
• Maintain a safe and creative environment for their students. 

Faculty 

• Support teachers and co-workers. 
• Attend all staff/ faculty meetings. 
• Meet with the Middle Years Programme Coordinators to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program's effectiveness. 

Administration 

• Maintain records on each child's progress and development. 
• Provide day-to-day support to Teaching Assistants, substitutes, and parent volunteers, which includes sharing daily program plans and discussing goals for children. 
• Keep up-to-date records of attendance, curriculum, and assessment tasks in Managebac database. 
• Monitor students at break times, lunch times, and other times as required. 
• Prepare documentation for IB external assessment. 

Parents 

• Communicate professionally and effectively to parents about student progress. 
• Work with Room Parents in planning and participating activities. 
• Conduct individual parent conferences at the end of each term, and as needed. 
• Establish a positive relationship with each student's family. 
• Make presentations to parents as needed. 
• Attend parent meetings when required. 
• Communicate and collaborate with parents of high needs students. 

External Community 

• Curate local community offerings and communicate opportunities to the school community. 
• Promote the Magellan International School Mission. 
• Create and maintain connections with relevant community resources.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree or certification in a scientific discipline. 
2. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary. 
3. A minimum of two years' experience teaching Science in Middle School. 
4. Experience integrating information technology with teaching. 
5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment. 
6. Ability to create a stimulating classroom environment. 
7. Ability to utilize the local context and environment to enhance learning. 
8. Ability to work with parents. 

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience working in International Baccalaureate schools is highly desirable.

Work Environment

This job operates in a classroom environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This role requires lifting, bending, standing, and stooping. 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is an Exempt position. “Core” work hours : 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Availability during occasional night and weekend events. 

Travel

Some out-of-area travel may be expected, but is not common. 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position, to include fingerprinting at the expense of the applicat, if no record exists for the applicant in the Texas Department of Public Safety database. CPR/First Aid and Texas Food Handler Certification will also be required for any employees working with students, fees for which will be paid by Magellan or reimbursed upon completion of required training. 

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

If hired, employee will be required to complete the federal Employment Eligibility Verification form, I-9. You will be required to present acceptable and original documents to prove your identity and authorization to work in the United States. Documents need to be presented no later than the third day of employment. Failure to do so will result in loss of employment at the school.
