ESLA is seeking a teacher who will serve as a member of the Literature and Writing Department who will teach courses in Latinx Literature, Los Angeles Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition to students in grades 9-12.
The ideal candidate has some or all of the following characteristics:
- A commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Robust knowledge of Latinx, Latin American, and Chicanx literature, history, and theory, with multilingual and intercultural awareness.
- Demonstrated success in meeting the needs of ethnically, culturally, socioeconomically, and linguistically diverse students.
- Experience designing curricula that can connect literary aesthetics, cultural movements, historical events, and ideas to events across geographies and time periods.
- Desire to work with 9th-grade students, supporting their transition to high school with scaffolded, skills-based instruction in reading, writing, and discussion.
- Confidence in selecting texts and designing assessments that support students in developing a comparativist approach to their study of the humanities.
- Demonstrated competence in speaking and reading Spanish.
Responsibilities:
Course load: 5-6 sections
- Semester 1: 9th Grade Lit, Rhetoric and Composition II
- Semester 2: 9th Grade Los Angeles Lit, Latinx Literature
- Electives will be designed in consultation with the Director of Academics and the Literature and Writing Department Chair and should fall under the broad umbrella of Latinx Studies, but the faculty member will be allowed signi?cant freedom in choosing content and designing syllabi.
- Preparation of course materials, and assessments, both working from existing curricular frameworks and through the development of new materials.
- Participate in an after-school (3:30–5:30 p.m.) program one day a week (sports, clubs, performing arts, academic support, etc.)
- Willingness to serve as an advisor to a small group of students.
- Attend regular community gatherings, including, but not limited to, meetings, Chapel, lunch, and major Feast Days.
Requirements:
All or most of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Latinx Studies, English, Comparative Literature, IndigenousStudies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field.
- A desire to work in a creative, collaborative, innovative environment.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Candidates will preferably have a master’s degree in a relevant field of study, 3+ years of teaching experience, or a CA teaching credential.

Describe a possible design for one unit of study in this course, including the text, guiding thematic questions,= skills-focus, and summative assessment.
