The New Community School is currently hiring an Upper School Chemistry Teacher for the 2022-2023 school year.
Job Description:
The position is for an Upper School Chemistry Teacher who is responsible for creating a classroom environment that motivates each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving; and that discovers and develops the special talents of students in scientific fields.
Essential Duties:
- Teaches skills, knowledge, and scientific mindset associated with chemistry.
- Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with course standards and curriculum.
- Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
- Utilizes standards-based assessment to determine students’ mastery of learning objectives.
- Implements evidence-based teaching and learning practices and designs a full range of meaningful learning experiences and assessments in which students are regularly asked to demonstrate understanding.
- Explores and integrates a range of resources, including technology, to engage, enhance, and extend learning goals.
- Plans a chemistry program that includes demonstrations, discussions, and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities to optimize learning.
- Demonstrates scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, charts, tables, sketches and other instructional aids.
- Instructs students in the proper use, care and safe handling of chemicals and science equipment.
- Provides for safe storage and proper use of chemicals, materials, and equipment.
- Understands the role of social, emotional, and physical wellbeing in the teaching and learning process and encourages the development of lifelong healthy behaviors.
- Encourages students to think independently and express ideas.
- Serves as the faculty advisor to a small group of students.
- Facilitates ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including formal written reports, in accordance with the school calendar.
- Participates in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
- Contributes to the rich student life program.
- Contributes to other aspects of the school.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate:
- Must possess a bachelor’s degree in related field.
- Must be eligible or possess Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement in
- Must possess a strong interest in learning differences, exploring varied instructional strategies, and working with students who have struggled in previous school placements.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the broader community.
- Must possess a desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
