St. Mark’s School of Texas seeks an experienced, inspiring, dynamic, passionate, and well-qualified music educator for the position of Director of Bands. The Director of Bands is responsible for the development, performance, and advancement of instrumental music disciplines for the band program, grades 5 - 12, including coordination of the curriculum. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chair of Fine Arts to develop a plan for the health and growth of the instrumental music program, both concert band and jazz ensemble. Instruction will include helping students with initial instrument selection, developing fundamental and advanced skills in students, and planning and directing concerts at all skill levels. The Director of Bands will also lead a Pep Band to play in support of athletic teams during games and pep rallies. In addition to instruction, the Director of Bands will also support students in grades 9 - 12 as they prepare for auditions in annual TPSMEA All-State selections. Finally, St. Mark’s is committed to character and leadership education, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to developing the capacity for character and leadership in all students while supporting their development in specific areas of academics and co-curricular programs.
- The successful candidate will be an accomplished musician demonstrating a life-long passion for music and serious development of craft
- Direct and supervise all school band performances, including concert band, jazz band, pep band, soloists, small ensembles, etc.
- Provide opportunities for band participation in curricular and extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, and TPSMEA
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on program needs
- Maintain current inventory of all instruments, equipment, and the music library
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement
- Grow the band program through recruitment and retention of current and future students
- Demonstrate the ability to create a supportive environment in which students explore, fully participate, and grow in confidence as they strive to achieve their potential in pursuit of a desire to make music
- Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, alumni, and donors
- Seek out professional development opportunities at the local, state, and national levels
Experience / Qualifications & Skills
- A bachelor’s degree in a field of music is required; a master’s degree in a field of music or music education is preferred.
- Five or more years of teaching in music in middle or high school, or higher education; independent school experience is a plus.
- Demonstratable ability to teach all instrument fundamentals
- Fluency with a variety of technology tools to advance learning
- Passion for subject matter and for working with young people and colleagues
- Enthusiastic and collaborative approach to working with colleagues
