St. Mark’s School of Texas seeks a dynamic and innovative educator to teach 8^th-grade physics and chemistry in addition to contributing to the school’s engineering programs by teaching an engineering class and sponsoring clubs.  The primary responsibility would be teaching Science-8, which is an advanced physical science course that devotes a semester each to physics and chemistry while focusing on building fundamental science skills and laboratory habits.  Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the physical sciences – physics, chemistry, engineering, etc. – and have experience teaching these subjects at the upper school or advanced middle school level.  The candidate should also be capable of teaching a middle or upper school class in robotics or engineering and be eager to sponsor extracurricular engineering activities.  In this capacity, the candidate would work with the Makerspace Director to coordinate engineering education in the state-of-the-art engineering wing of the new Winn Science Center. 

St. Mark’s students are eager and motivated learners, and the science courses are based upon frequent laboratory experiences.  A strong candidate should be a content expert who is able to design and conduct innovative and challenging laboratory activities, teach with an engaging classroom style, and appeal to the learning styles of a diverse and extremely talented group of boys.  He or she should have a desire to participate enthusiastically in the various activities that occur outside of the lab in a vibrant independent school community.  Likewise, he or she should demonstrate a commitment to character and leadership education for all boys, giving equal priority to their character and intellectual development.

Responsibilities

• Teaching three or more sections of Science 8: Physics/Chemistry
• Teach one or more sections of engineering or robotics in the Middle or Upper School
• Sponsoring an extracurricular activity such as the Upper School Robotics Team, Rocketry Club, Middle School Lego Robotics, etc.
• Supporting the Makerspace Director in delivering the engineering curriculum and managing the many activities held in the makerspace and fabrication lab
• Serving as an Advisor to a small group of boys
• Contributing to the broader community by participating in the wilderness program, club program, or athletic program, depending on experience
• Participating in the character and leadership education program

Experience / Qualifications & Skills

• A bachelor’s degree or higher in a physical science or in engineering
• Five or more years teaching the physical sciences at the upper or advanced middle school level; independent school experience is a plus.
• Knowledge of varied teaching strategies fluency with a variety of technology tools to differentiate and advance learning
• Passion for subject matter and for working with young people
• Enthusiastic and collaborative approach to working with colleagues
• Ability to contribute to the engineering program, which includes experience with
  • computer-aided design
  • automated manufacturing tools such as CNC routers, laser cutters, 3D printers, etc.
  • integrated engineering projects using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar microcontroller
  • programming for Arduino or similar microcontrollers
  • using a variety of hand and power tools found in a shop/ makerspace
• Fluency with the breadth of technology involved in engineering activity and eagerness to stay current with new developments
