Lowell School, a progressive school of approximately 350 students in Northwest Washington, DC, is currently seeking applicants for the position of Primary School Learning Specialist. Ideal candidates will hold a Master’s degree in special education, have at least two years of experience teaching at the elementary level, and possess knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of elementary-aged children. The Primary School Learning Specialist is a full-time position and reports to the Director of the Primary School. The Learning Specialist will provide classroom and instructional support to meet the needs of students with learning differences in a general education setting and targeted small group support. The Learning Specialist will also monitor student progress and play an essential role in partnering with and communicating needs, services, and accommodations to faculty, parents/guardians, and the Director of Primary School.
Required Qualifications
- Candidates should have experience administering reading assessments and analyzing data to make individualized learning plans.
- Candidates should have training in systematic, multi-sensory-based approaches to reading and writing instruction.
- Candidates should have an articulated understanding of neurodiversity and the ability to interpret neuropsychological evaluations.
- Candidates should have a demonstrated experience in and a passion for working with primary students with learning differences.
- Candidates should have a demonstrated experience working with teachers in implementing interventions and accommodations.
- Candidates should be inspired by Lowell’s mission and have a commitment to social justice and equity, and cultural competence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Willingness to work collaboratively and have excellent communication skills.
- Familiarity with and experience in curriculum design and mapping using Understanding by Design.
- Experience supporting the development of executive functions
- Demonstrated commitment to a child-centered approach to teaching and learning
