Dance Teacher
Full-time Position
July 2022
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Dance teacher interested in shaping and overseeing our dance program beginning in the fall (August) of 2022. In addition to producing two dance shows per year (one choreographed and directed by students), the person selected will teach all levels of dance, from beginning to advanced. College Prep is a community of life-long learning and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members.
A qualified candidate will have:
- A Bachelor's degree in Dance; or the equivalent professional eminence in performance or dance education
- Experience teaching modern dance to high school students at a very high level.
- Choreographic experience with high school students
- Enthusiasm for working with high school students outside of the classroom as part of advising and other programs
- Demonstrated cultural competence
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor
- Experience working in teams and a strong sense of collegiality
- Enthusiasm for administrative responsibilities
Responsibilities include the administration of a full-time modern dance program. This includes but is not limited to, bringing in guest choreographers to work with the dancers at all levels, supporting the production of The CHOREO Series, our annual student-directed and choreographed dance show in January, and producing our annual all dance department Spring Dance Showcase Performance in April.
In addition, full-time teachers take a share of other departmental and general school responsibilities such as advising a group of students, chaperone duties and planning Intraterm. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit school that embraces equity and inclusiveness and actively seeks to strengthen its ties to the greater Oakland community. The salary is competitive. Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan, and, most collegially, a prepared lunch every day.
The College Prep Arts Department is innovative and rigorous. We offer a variety of courses in the Visual, Musical, Vocal, Dance, and Dramatic Arts. Student enrollment in our classes is generally kept to 16 students in order to maximize student participation and engagement. Students are required to take a minimum of two years of arts courses for graduation; most exceed the requirement. The Arts Department actively cultivates and enjoys a culture of innovative collaboration and collegiality among its members and students.
