Job Description
Summary of Responsibilities:
Hackley School seeks a Middle and Upper School Chinese Teacher for September 2022-23. The preferred candidate has a strong background in the target language (BA in Chinese; graduate degree preferred) and independent school teaching experience. Hackley School Modern Languages Department offers Chinese in grades 6-12, ranging from beginning Chinese to AP Chinese. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching Chinese at the Middle and/or Upper School levels. Other responsibilities include being an academic advisor to Middle School or Upper School students. Hackley is also interested in candidates who have experience with coaching, boarding, and club supervision, as well as a desire for professional development.
The ideal candidate will collaborate with the other Hackley Chinese teacher and serve as a member of the Modern Languages Department. Hackley welcomes candidates with a desire to travel abroad given our robust Global Education and Language Immersion travel program.
Reporting Structure:
The Chinese teacher will report to the chair of the Modern Languages Department as well as to the director of the division to which he or she has teaching assignments.
Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities associated with that of a subject area teacher including lesson planning, development and assignment of student learning activities, student assessment, record keeping, grading, and grade reporting
- Creation of a warm and engaging classroom environment in either the Middle or Upper School
- Committed to learning and teaching in a collaborative, dynamic environment
- Active, positive, and professional participation in all faculty meetings
- Other division-based responsibilities, such as advising students, as assigned by the division director
- Comfortable using educational technology and integrating it into curriculum
- Experience and professional development related to issues of diversity and inclusivity valued

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in related field preferred.
- A qualified Chinese specialist, comfortable conducting classes in the target language and contributing to a curriculum with a communicative approach
