The Dalton School, a progressive independent K-12 gender inclusive school in Manhattan seeks a full-time Dance Theater teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. Dalton seeks an accomplished and visionary educator to join the First Program’s performing arts program. The Dance Theater teacher will work with fellow performing arts colleagues within and across the divisions to fulfill our mission of valuing and nurturing imagination and self-expression in the arts, and being particularly mindful of our historical emphasis on music, dance, theater and visual arts. We believe that active participation in and exposure to the performing arts expands our students’ horizons, empowers the development of their voice, and enhances their lives both at the First Program and beyond. This individual will be a dynamic and collaborative self-starter who uses their background in theater, drama and movement as tools for the explicit development and exercise of life skills. Candidates should be comfortable in moving their bodies with ease and expression.
Responsibilities:
- Teach weekly Dance and Theater classes, Grades 1-3
- Provide support for special projects/curriculum for Kindergarten students, as needed
- Write, direct, choreograph and execute original musical dramatizations based on children’s literature with a NYC theme
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to create arts-integrated curriculum that focuses on the explicit development and exercise of life skills.
- Help to organize student assemblies for the division. This includes clear planning, communication and execution with multiple stakeholders.
- Assist FP Administration in execution and planning of large-scale, performances for various community events throughout the year
- Work as part of a larger team with the lower school music teachers to coordinate and implement curricula
- Liaise with other performing arts colleagues across the lower, middle and high school divisions
Qualifications:
- Possesses sustained experience teaching a lower school dance and/or theater program
- Finds joy in working with children and in school life
- An advanced degree or equivalent experience in Fine Arts, Theater and Dance
- Approaches work with optimism, energy, kindness and a sense of humor
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Possesses the ability to work across departmental lines, fostering collaboration and cooperation amongst faculty, staff and administration
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to the mission of The Dalton School, as well as the school’s ongoing dedication to ongoing learning about diversity, equity, inclusion and justice initiatives
