The orchestra intern will direct the Exeter Symphonia (an intermediate string orchestra) and will coach several chamber music groups in the instrumental chamber music program. The orchestra intern will participate in the March performance tour of the Concert Choir and Chamber Orchestra. The ideal candidate will bring orchestral conducting skills, excellent musicianship, diverse knowledge of repertoire, initiative, and a desire to work with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community. Additional opportunities exist to gain experience working with campus choirs, jazz ensembles, music theory or music appreciation courses, and/or in the music production program.

Applicants must have a degree(s) in music with demonstrated success leading string and/or symphonic ensembles.  An ability to work with developing string players on the fundamental technical and musical skills of ensemble playing is required. Enthusiasm for working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom is essential.  Spending time with students, giving extra help, advising, working as dormitory faculty, participating in department work and leading extracurricular activities is an integral part of the job.  The orchestra intern will have a unique opportunity to step in and conduct the Exeter Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra as a leave replacement for the director of orchestras in the spring trimester. 

Accountabilities

While individual responsibilities will vary from one faculty position to another, the major job duties of all faculty members include the following:

• Teaching: Interns participate as rehearsal assistants and/or conductors for ensembles and gradually assume increasing responsibilities. The orchestra intern will be assigned coaching responsibilities with chamber music groups based on their background and ability. Mentorship is offered in developing rehearsal techniques, conducting skills, and classroom teaching.
• Cultural Competency: Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life
• Residential Life:  Faculty generally reside in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life.  Each faculty member is generally responsible for one weekend and one to four week-nights of dormitory duty per month, depending on the dormitory size.
• Extracurricular Activities: Faculty are generally expected to participate in the school’s extracurricular activities (e.g. coaching, advising student clubs, and/or committee work).

• Willingness to enforce all school policies and rules governing student behavior.
• Proof of authority to work in the Unites States, full time.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check (conducted every 5 years). 
• Clean Driving record.
