The Stony Brook School is an independent co-educational college preparatory school (grades 7-12) of nearly 450 day and boarding students, that exists to challenge young men and women to know Jesus Christ as Lord, to love others as themselves, and to grow in knowledge and skill, so they may serve the world through their character and leadership. As the Director of Diversity, Unity, and Belonging you will oversee a school climate and culture in which all Stony Brook stakeholders, based on Stony Brook’s mission, are expected to feel welcomed, known, respected, and loved based upon the example of Jesus Christ. The Director will lead the development and implementation of diversity, unity, and belonging initiatives. He or she will collaborate with leadership, faculty and staff to foster an environment of unity, oneness, and belonging in the areas of admissions, recruitment and retention of faculty, student experience, communications, pedagogy/curriculum, and spiritual formation. The Director of DUB will also serve as a mentor and resource for marginalized students, helping them to build and maintain strong and lasting relationships.
Responsibilities
- Reports directly to the Head of school and serves on the leadership team.
- Attends leadership team meetings and provides reports to the leadership team regarding broad issues of diversity, unity, and belonging in school life.
- In collaboration with Diversity, Unity, and Belonging Council, creates yearly action plan with DUB goals to be accomplished
- Presents an annual report to the leadership team describing the progress made on diversity, unity, and belonging initiatives versus goals for the past year.
- Chairs the school’s Diversity, Unity, and Belonging Council
- Serves as a resource to the admissions office vis-à-vis prospective families (e.g. assisting that office with school and community open houses)
- Assists the Director of Human Resources in recruiting and hiring a diverse faculty
- Serves as a liaison for faculty and staff regarding issues related to diversity, unity, and belonging
- Recommends and oversees a budget to support diversity, unity, and belonging efforts across the school
- Teaches one or two courses annually as needed (in the middle school and/or upper school)
- Advises the Head of School on Diversity, Unity, and Belonging matters
- Develops and implements programs and initiatives designed to increase diversity, unity, and belonging throughout the school, and especially for underrepresented students, staff and families
- Partners with academic personnel to help oversee and implement a diverse and inclusive curriculum
- Coordinates DUB professional development opportunities
- Conducts professional development opportunities for faculty and staff
- Speaks on DUB themes and other topics as needed in chapels and assemblies
- Forges community partnerships with churches, schools, civic organizations, and non-profit organizations to broaden reach and influence of Stony Brook School
- Oversees all DUB related on-campus groups, including affinity groups, for students, parents, faculty, and staff
Qualifications
You are an experienced educator with a personal commitment to following Jesus Christ. You exude warmth and kindness and every interaction you have with constituents and builds trust. You have excellent people skills as well as strong communication and public relations skills, both written and spoken. You have a personal and professional commitment to cultivating Biblical diversity, thrive in collaborative environments, and can balance the challenge and joy of working in a Christian school.
- Master’s degree preferred
- Experience working in a supervisory and/or collaborative role
- A passion for the Stony Brook School mission
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong conflict management skills
- Collaborative community builder
- Upper school or middle school teaching experience preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking ability
- Ability to work after school and some evenings
