Maclay Middle School seeks a supportive, experienced, and innovative counselor who will provide information, support, and guidance to students, parents, and teachers in an effort to promote emotional health and social success for our students.
The Middle School Counselor will work closely with the Director of Middle School, Dean of Academics, and Maclay School’s Guidance Department to implement programs and experiences that focus on helping students develop coping skills, responsible behavior, and proactive interventions that align with the school’s mission. The Middle School Counselor will be instrumental in providing guidance on students’ social/emotional paths through their applied understanding of childhood and adolescent development with strong clinical skills. The Middle School Counselor will work with teachers, students, and families to foster an emotionally healthy environment based on principles of trusting, collaboration, equity, inclusion, and serving the whole student. The Middle School Counselor will be part of our School’s Counseling Team with the expectation of, at times, needing to serve in other divisions in emergency situations as well as serving as a leader/co-leader in our school’s committees related to the wellness of our students or the broader community.
This is a 12-month position, beginning in July 2022.
Prerequisites for the position are an advanced degree in Counseling, Guidance, Social Work, or equivalent degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience.

The Middle School Counselor is a member of the Guidance Department and the Middle School’s Administrative team who works directly with the Middle School Director, the Middle School Dean of Academics, Grade Level Chairpersons, faculty, parents, and students. The MS Counselor will teach a Wellness course.
Responsibilities:
- Provide both individual and group guidance and counseling for students.
- Serve as a consultant to teachers and administrators.
- Organize and participate in parent conferences.
- Make appropriate referrals for psychological testing and evaluation.
- When appropriate, initiate and coordinate special assemblies with guest speakers on topics relevant to the physical and psychological well-being of our students.
- The Guidance Counselor will teach course(s) depending on the needs of the middle school.
- Communicates often with the Middle School Administrative Team about concerns and all other relevant matters pertaining to social/emotional well-being.
- Be available to attend and assist in Middle School meetings as needed.
- Attends Administrative team meetings when needed.
- Helps to prepare Middle School activities/programs that address students’ age-appropriate social/emotional needs in conjunction with the Middle School Administrative Team.
- Lead the Advisory and Responsive Classroom Program; provide weekly lessons for faculty within the division.
- Assist with the development and implementation of support and prevention programs.
- Serve in other divisions/departments and committees as needed
Other Related Duties
- Facilitate student programs for middle school.
- Assist in morning duty (7:45am-front/student drop-off or courtyard) and lunch duty when needed
- Assist in after-school duty (front/student pick-up).
- Work with the Guidance Department and the school’s administration as needed.
- Attend professional development workshops/conferences to maintain student support expertise in the middle school.
- Be available throughout the school day for faculty, parents, and students.
- Be available to represent Maclay School’s Counseling Team.
