Greene Street Friends School is seeking a dynamic and visionary Middle School Learning Specialist with depth of experience and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Middle School Learning Specialist will provide Greene Street Friends School students and teachers with support and training, to enable them to become strategic and motivated learners. A successful candidate will support our community in using a collaborative process with families, teachers and other professionals to identify and support student learning needs individually and in classrooms. Additionally, advocate for and build shared responsibility between faculty, parents and caregivers to meet the needs of our students. Provide activities, experiences, and innovations that lead faculty to improve individual pedagogy and the system as a whole.
This position begins in August 2022
- Enhance teachers’ understanding of the diversity of learners, and help teachers develop specific strategies that enable students to learn more effectively
- Provide short-term support and demonstrations to teachers who are emerging in their ability to differentiate instruction.
- Provide short-term support to students who require specific academic interventions, in partnership with lead teachers and the Student Support Team.
- Coach teachers to best support our diverse study body of learners. Effectively promote a culture of team teaching and work alongside lead teachers to address the specific needs of each classroom.
- Communicate and coordinate with families, outside services, teachers, and administration to ensure that student needs are being met.
- Provide professional development to teacher, staff and the school community that enhances impactful neurodivergent learning environments
Specific Duties:
- Provide training and guidance to teachers in the areas of differentiated instruction and other areas of pedagogy in consultation with the Associate Head of School.
- Teach and work with students in cooperation with lead teachers when a specific learning need arises, in coordination with the Associate Head of School.
- Meet with lead teachers in a coaching role to improve teaching and learning.
- Provide training and guidance to teachers and Teaching Associates in coordination with the Associate Head of School.
- Read psychological evaluations on current students to aid teachers, parents, and support staff in meeting the needs of students.
- In collaboration with teachers and the Student Support Team, develop, maintain and update the learning profiles for students.
- Attend conferences on students with academic and related behavioral concerns in coordination with the Associate Head of School.
- Support the preparation, scheduling, and administering of ERB tests for students. Review ERB scores to determine school-wide and individual student trends and concerns.
- Teach a study skills program to students in grades 5-8 as the schedule permits in coordination with the Associate Head of School.
- Seek and provide professional development in relevant learning support areas.
- Attend Back to School Night and Move-Up Night, as well as other school functions as outlined in the personnel handbook.
- If a student in grades 5-8 is placed on academic probation, provide support to the Dean of Middle School and the teaching team to generate appropriate and meaningful interventions and recommendations.
A bachelor's degree in special education or a related educational field is required; Advanced degree is preferred but not required
