Upland Country Day School is a coeducational, non-sectarian day school serving approximately 165 students in Preschool through grade 9. Located in Kennett Square, PA, southwest of Philadelphia, Upland draws students from towns throughout Chester County and northern Delaware. Upland seeks an experienced, dynamic Art teacher to work with all grade levels from Prekindergarten through 9th Grade. This is a full-time position for the 2022-2023 school year.
Entrusted with the education and care of children, the Faculty at Upland promotes the best interests of the child within the context of the School’s philosophy. Those who teach are responsible for the quality of their teaching, promoting their own growth, and modeling the values in and out of the classroom that the School espouses. The following is an outline of the major responsibilities for the position of Art teacher:
- Be comfortable teaching Kindergarten through 9th grade, with a particular focus on grades 6-9. Create developmentally appropriate lessons, and be willing to pivot and stay flexible based on students’ needs and interests.
- Teach a wide variety of art techniques, including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles. Be comfortable striking a balance between craftsmanship and experimentation in any given project. Focus on play, creative thinking, and hand skills, building students’ confidence in the art arena.
- Collaborate regularly with the other Art teacher, as well as with other Specials teachers and homeroom teachers to create curriculum-based and interdisciplinary art projects. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Possess knowledge of an extensive range of artists from across time periods, art movements, and a diversity of cultures.
- Be comfortable creating and presenting Google slideshows to accompany new projects. Facilitate group discussions about students’ artwork and other art topics.
- Maintain the visual arts classroom and kiln room, regularly order art supplies, and display student artwork throughout the school. Mount two to three all school student exhibitions every year.
- Collaborate with colleagues and the School’s leadership in the design and implementation of curriculum and other programs within the School’s philosophy.
Qualified candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three to five years of experience teaching Art. He/she must have excellent written and oral communication skills, along with exceptional organizational skills. The ideal candidate will bring creativity and new ideas to the curricular and extracurricular elements of the Fine Arts at Upland, as well as a commitment to maintaining and growing the School’s existing programs.
