Job Summary:
Teach and refine home economics and sustainability curriculum, which includes healthy cooking, gardening, light carpentry, sewing, sustainability (reuse, reduce, recycle, rot and community sustained agriculture), and personal finances/budgeting. Coordinate and maintain classroom and garden. Two courses, home economics/sustainability, and world cuisines are offered. The home economics and sustainability teacher reports to the Middle School Principal. Teachers are expected to work collaboratively with other teachers in the Middle School, interact with faculty of grades 3-12, with other professionals, with staff and administrators, with students, and with parents. The work year is 176 days as stipulated in the Faculty Association contract and the workweek is 40 hours for full-time teachers.
The anticipated start date for this position is 9/1/2022. This is a one-year position filling in for a teacher on leave of absence.
Responsibilities:
- Teach a course in home economics and sustainability and an elective that highlights one or more aspects of the home economics and sustainability program like world cuisine.
- Teach skills in healthy cooking, gardening, light carpentry, sewing, sustainability (reuse, reduce, recycle, rot and community sustained agriculture), and personal finances/budgeting.
- Serve as a Middle School advisor.
- Collaborate with Middle School faculty.
- Maintain accurate student records.
- Assess program and revise when appropriate.
- Create and implement a communication plan of program details for all constituents.
- Coordinate and maintain use of home economics and sustainability classroom and garden.
- Participate in student life programs like performances and camps.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience or Certifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Master's degree preferred.
Experience:
- At least two years of teaching experience preferred.
- Working with Middle School age children required; skill in culinary, gardening, carpentry, economics, sewing, and building budgets preferred.
