Mt. Bethel Christian Academy, located in the heart of East Cobb, is seeking a part time Reading Specialist, certified (or trained) Orton-Gillingham, for our Pathways program in grades 1-2. Working with a paraprofessional and a team of teachers, the desirable candidate will use their faith and Biblical knowledge to create an enthusiastic learning environment that keeps students actively engaged in the learning process. The ideal candidate:
- Understands the academic, social, and emotional needs of students who struggle with confidence in reading and language arts in order to create a learning environment that meets those needs
- Develops Orton-Gillingham based lesson plans and objectives that provide individualized and small group instruction that adapts to the strengths and weaknesses of the enrolled students
- Creates and maintains a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged and are contributing members
- Facilitates, monitors, and assesses student learning appropriately and effectively
- Promotes critical thinking skills through the use of research-based instructional practices and strategies
Qualifications and skills required:
- Certified in the Orton-Gillingham method of phonics instruction and reading remediation
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
- 5+ years experience working with students with mild to moderate reading challenges, ideally in an independent, faith-based setting
- Enthusiastic, creative, dynamic team player who enjoys working with our targeted population
- Extensive knowledge in the skills needed for successful reading (i.e., word recognition and language comprehension) and the ability to strengthen those areas of student weakness to improve reading fluency and comprehension
