St. Nicholas School seeks a high energy, hard worker with a love of children and nature to fill a unique opportunity in outdoor education. The position is for an elementary school Garden/Outdoor Education Teacher who is responsible for teaching grades PrK3-5 cross curricular lessons.
St. Nicholas School includes multiple gardens on school grounds that are used as an outdoor classroom for hands-on learning. The campus also includes a trail through a forested area.
The Garden Educator teaches lessons that include botany, gardening skills, environmental stewardship, sustainability and nutrition in addition to Math, Science and the Arts. The ideal candidate has experience in outdoor education, but a creative teacher or thoughtful gardener will be considered.
The position is a 12-month job that includes summer camp. Hours are Monday-Friday 7:45-3:45 August through May and then 2-3 days per week in June and July.
Responsibilities include:
- Teach a garden/outdoor education curriculum and work creatively and independently to adapt lessons to specific classes and situations
- Maintain the school gardens
- Collaborate with teachers from all areas of the school
- Communicate with school community via e-newsletters
- Maintain cafeteria compost program when COVID restrictions are lifted
- Teach live lessons via zoom and prepare recorded lessons when necessary
- Consult with the Maintenance Department on campus landscaping ideas
