Germantown Friends School is seeking an experienced Theatre/Movement teacher to work with students in 6th-8th grades in a number of both elective and compulsory courses and productions. The focus of the Middle School Theatre Arts Program at GFS is to balance introductory skill development with community and character building. It is our goal to engage students in new forms of creative expression while at the same time developing and reinforcing positive relationships among their peer group. We strive for a collaborative approach to theater and dance; it is in this spirit of collaboration that we seek to grow our team of teaching artists.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Create and implement a theatre & movement curriculum for students in 6th to 8th
- Teach introductory dance and movement skills across various styles and techniques.
- Teach introductory acting skills including (but not limited to) improvisation, projection/articulation, stage movement, and basic characterization.
- Encourage and engage students, many of whom will be new to the physical and dramatic arts, toward participation and personal expression.
- Serve as the artistic director of a Middle School musical (an elective open to all students in 6th to 8th grades).
- Collaboratively participate on a team of teaching artists in the presentation of a grade-wide performance/production.
- Be an active participant in the life of the school by attending faculty meetings, professional development, and trainings, as well as serving as a middle school advisor.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be an energetic and creative artist, who is enthusiastic about sharing their passion with young people.
- Possess personal awareness, ability, and desire to work in a diverse and inclusive Quaker school environment.
- Have experience working with middle school students.
- Possess skills in classroom management and behavior modification.
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and/or training.
- Have outstanding communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Have the willingness and ability to work in the after-school hours and/or weekends for occasional rehearsals, performances, or other school activities as required.
