Civic Engagement Educator
Set on 25 acres in suburban Rochester, New York, The Harley School campus features The Commons, a living building that represents the School’s commitment to the many facets of sustainability. Framed from a repurposed 19th-century barn, this structure houses The Briggs Center for Civic Engagement, a maker space, and the Center for Mindfulness and Empathy Education–home to Harley’s Hospice program. Adjacent to The Commons are an organic micro-farm and a greenhouse–both integral to the mission of this facility and the faculty who teach in this space.
Harley seeks a full-time Civic Engagement Educator to begin in the fall of 2022–a position grounded in The Commons. Primary responsibilities include facilitating civic engagement programming, teaching Rights & Responsibilities–a signature course required of all students in ninth grade–co-leading the Grade 12 Capstone Program, teaching Commons Department electives, and supporting Commons initiatives. Although based in the Upper School, the faculty member will also teach a discovery block course in the Middle School. Additional expectations include–but are not limited to–academic advising, chaperoning, extracurricular mentoring and supervision, and committee work. Ideally, our Civic Engagement Educator will embrace opportunities to collaborate with Harley’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator, a position new to the School in 2021-22.
The ideal candidate will also:
- Be an approachable, inspiring educator;
- Have relevant teaching experience at the secondary or college level;
- Be enthusiastic about collaborating with colleagues;
- Demonstrate a commitment to advocacy work;
- Coordinate and develop mission-aligned community partnerships;
- Support sustainability research and programming;
- Possess an appropriate undergraduate degree (Master’s preferred);
- Be familiar with independent school culture;
- Promote open, dynamic, and critical discussion to engage students in disciplined project-based learning.
In the interest of building a diverse and inclusive workforce, The Harley School welcomes candidates from all backgrounds. Our School’s mission statement begins, “We are a diverse, inclusive school.” Along with a cover letter and résumé, we ask that you provide a personal statement on how you see yourself promoting diversity and inclusivity if you join the Harley community. Please submit these materials via email to jobs@harleyschool.org. Indicate “Civic Engagement Educator” in the subject line. Applications will be accepted until the position has been filled.
