Fountain Valley School is a co-ed, college-preparatory boarding/day school enrolling 230 students in grades 9-12. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors in a diverse community to develop young adults who are courageous, open-minded, self-reliant, curious, and compassionate. This position reports directly to the dean of students. This person is responsible for assisting the dean of students with the student and residential life programs of the school. The assistant dean of students also shares the responsibilities for the advising program and the weeknight and weekend duty assignments.
General Duties:
- Lead the Residential Life Team
- Work closely with the House Directors and Residential Assistants to ensure the continued growth and development of the residential program
- Lead the annual House Director Retreat prior to orientation
- Assist the Dean of Students with disciplinary incidents
- Co-teach the 9th-grade Chapter One course
- In collaboration with the Admin Team, create Major Events Calendar for every school year; includes creating the Google School calendar
- Work with the Dean of Students’ office to help create an engaging orientation program.
- Assist with student leader meetings and training
- Provide leadership and assistance with the annual Student Leader Retreat prior to orientation
- Assist the weekend programing, to include creating weekend teams and the year-long schedule
- Oversee attendance records
- Work with the Weekend Duty Team Leaders and Student Leaders to help create robust weekend programming
- Oversee the weeknight program, creating a schedule of duty faculty and providing coverage when needed. Provide feedback to and leadership for House Directors
- Assist the Dean of Students’ office in creating class retreats and attend at least two of them each year
- Work with the Dean of Students’ office to create, refine, and deliver the Student Life Curriculum
- Provide leadership and assistance with special events, including prom, homecoming, ski weekend, special weekends, etc.
- Work with the Admissions Office to place all new students in rooms and with advisors prior to orientation, which may require time during the summer
- Oversee the room selection each spring and work with House Directors to place returning students in rooms.
- Assist House Directors in navigating roommate conflicts throughout the school year and lead mediations where appropriate
- Lead the Residential Assistant selection process each spring
- Work with the Dean of Students office and Frautschi Campus Center staff to offer engaging and consistent programming in the Frautschi Campus Center
Other Duties:
- Teach two classes
- Serve as a House Director
- Coach one season of athletics/afternoon activities preferably, swimming, soccer, tennis)
- Serve as an adviser to approximately six students
- Participate in a class level retreat along with other faculty members
- Participate in committees as assigned
- Participate in co-leading an Interim student trip (Spring experiential learning trip.)
- Serve as a Weekend Team Leader and on a weeknight duty team (1 weeknight a week unless a dorm parent then 2 weeknights a week), and 9 weekends a year)
- Provide coverage when needed
- Serve as an Administrator On Call (AOD)

- Ability to work with individuals in a courteous and professional manner
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate in a team environment
- Detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, self-directed and punctual
- Extensive knowledge of campus and the surrounding area
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple tasks at one time
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in LMS Blackbaud OnCampus and Google Educational Suite Apps
Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000 depending on experience
Working Conditions:
- Environment: indoor classroom working with some outdoor events
- Physical demands: able to sit and stand for at least 8 hours per day; must be able to lift 40 lb.
- Attendance at certain community events will be required
- Working relationships: students, parents, outside vendors, and all other employees
