Job Summary:

Relationships
The Academic Skills Teacher works closely with other members of the Academic Skills Program as well as any faculty who work with ASP students, their Advising Team Leader, Dorm Heads, and respective Deans. They establish and maintain working relationships with one’s students, advisees, and their parents.

Teacher:
- Teaches five class sections of Academic Skills
- Demonstrates proficiency in working with a range of neurodivergent students; supports the well-being of all students
- Inspires and supports learning
- Teaches and guides students in executive functioning, self-advocacy, study skills, strategies and individual skill building as determined by the student’s learning profile.
- Develops individualized learning plans
- Communicates regularly with parents, teachers and students to develop and implement a plan designed to promote the student’s educational and social development
- Demonstrates content knowledge and teaching skills for several disciplines as well as proficiency in effective use of technology
- Effectively uses Canvas to plan and organize instruction
- Collaborates with other ASP faculty to develop and execute top quality curricula and programming; attends regularly scheduled departmental meetings
- Supports a shared ASP vision that is consistent with the Academy’s vision and goals
- Develops long range ASP goals, practices, and policies in collaboration with other ASP members
- Engages in professional practice and development to stay current and informed with trends, research and teaching practices in working with students with learning differences.
- Reports to the Director of ASP any ideas and/or challenges one deems appropriate or necessary.
- Collaborates with other faculty members through various projects and committees; engages productively to exchange information and ideas contributing to the academic and overall school program
Advisor:
Assumes an advisory role for up to eight students, serving as the communications link between the student, teachers, coaches, and family. The advisor makes calls to parents on a regular basis, per scheduled school calendar times, and as needed. The Advisor knows, respects and embraces each advisee as an individual; maintains a strong understanding of adolescent development. Advisors regularly meet briefly with advisees during assemblies and during the scheduled advisory block weekly. The advisor provides guidance regarding all aspects of a student’s life at Gould including activities, social adjustment, life on campus, course selection, academics, and discipline. Advisors are expected to communicate with their advising team leader on a weekly basis.
Athletics/Co-curricular
Assumes coaching/supervisory responsibilities within the sports and co-curricular programs for two of the three trimesters. Some coaching assignments are in the interscholastic program and other assignments are the intramural programs. Some supervising assignments are responsible for clubs and other programs that enhance the educational experience of the students and are assigned according to interest and workload.
Community Life
Faculty help to supervise students on school nights and weekends. Faculty and student leaders work together as a team to make the Gould experience one in which students can learn from one another. School night duty usually involves one to two nights of evening campus coverage, occasional backup coverage when necessary, and weekend duty that is assigned on a rotating basis in an equitable way. Faculty will be assigned to a weekend crew at the beginning of the school year. If conflicts arise for either evening or weekend duty, faculty members should arrange for coverage and communicate any changes to the AOD or team leaders.
Qualification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required; relevant advanced degrees preferred though experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree
- Significant prior relevant experience as an educator
- Strong understanding of adolescents, learning differences, learning disabilities, and executive functioning
- Committed to working with adolescent students and colleagues in a boarding school environment
- Strong organizational skills; adept in using a range of technology
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Personal warmth and a collaborative, open mindset
- Skilled at establishing and maintaining positive, professional relationships
- Contributes as a positive member of any team
- Possess a valid drivers license and successfully pass a criminal and sexual offender background check, obtain CHRC clear status from the Maine Department of Education
- Condition of employment for the 2022-2023 academic year, pursuant to Gould’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, all faculty and staff will be required to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must request an exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief on or before July 1st, 2022
Other Duties

Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, 10 month, exempt position beginning mid-August 2022 for the new school year.
