The Dean of the Lower School is an integral member of a senior leadership team led by the Principal. The ideal candidate will contribute to building and realizing the shared mission of excellence and high standards for all students as part of this collaborative team. S/he will serve as the primary liaison with parents and families and work closely with the Principal and the Vice Principal of Curriculum and Academics to ensure the coherence and success of the Lower School.
The Dean of the Lower School will be primarily responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Lower School’s academic and social programs in grades PK through 5. S/he is responsible for creating and sustaining a learning environment in which all members of the Lower School community - students, staff, and families, are welcomed and thrive.
ACADEMICS
- Ensure the daily operations of the Lower School are in keeping with the mission of the school;
- Maintain close communication with all teachers within the division, and to provide constructive feedback on academic practices and behavior management; ? Teach classes occasionally, develop rapport with the students, and handle specific student concerns and issues;
- Be a member of the Academy Leadership Team taking a comprehensive view of policy and curriculum implementation in addition to assuming the many and various tasks required by Academy leaders;
- Ensure that all students across the full ability range have maximum support and opportunities to reach their full potential and become effective and valued participants in a global society.
FACULTY AND STAFF
- Maximize the effectiveness of all stakeholders in promoting an inclusive Academy culture;
- Ensure high quality teaching and learning, including evaluation and review of teachers and staff of the Lower School in conjunction with the Principal and Vice Principal of
Curriculum and Academics;
- Contribute, as part of the senior leadership team, to training, coaching and mentoring of the Lower School staff. and the professional learning of staff;
- Monitor and attend to the educational, physical, social-emotional, and psychological needs of the members of our school community and develop plans for meeting these needs;
- Provide for the academic and social-emotional well being of students; maintain complete academic records on all students; oversee the grading and the reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement;
- Supervise, support, and evaluate faculty in the development and implementation of the academic program;
- Participate in the process of appointing new staff including interviewing and providing recommendations to the Principal;
- Provide support for new staff members to learn the Academy’s routines, structure, and curricula materials related to their role;
- Coordinate the Extended Day Program and develop appropriate pedagogical practices.MANAGEMENT
- Contribute towards the formulation of all Academy policies and procedures;
- Plan, schedule and support duties including but not limited to lunch/break/before and after school programming;
- Play a leading part in the Academy’s community by being present for all events, modeling expectations for staff, and all other activities that demonstrate building a strong culture;
- Oversee the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the school;
- Assist in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs;
- Assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events;
- Keep the entire school community informed of various school programs and activities;
- Communicate with the Lower School community regarding upcoming events, recent highlights, notable aspects of the program, as well as to provide parent education on topics relevant to the success of our students;
- Ensure that the Principal and Vice Principal are well informed about the status and concerns related to the Lower School operations;
- Attend Academy leadership meetings as appropriate;
- Maintain records as required by statute or policy through the use of various logs, tracking records, computer programs, or other programs;
- Assume responsibility for emergent issues as needed;
- Prepare, in conjunction with other administrators, a master daily schedule and assign teachers and students to classes and other duties;
- Perform other duties that serve in the best interest of the school and as assigned by the Principal and/or Vice Principal of Curriculum and Academics.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Committed to promoting an all-girl education
- Master’s Degree in education or beyond preferred
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a school leadership position, preferred
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents
- Skilled communicator - both written and spoken
- Encourages collaborative teamwork in and out of the classroom, models effective communication skills for students and teachers
- Leads by example and invests time in the life of the school by participating in all aspects that support the student and faculty experience.
