Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 500 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 37 states and over 30 countries. SSM is looking for a Middle School Director for its Middle School division, which includes approximately 115 students in grades 6-9. The Middle School Director is responsible for all aspects of the daily operations of the Middle School. The core responsibilities of the Middle School Director are the development, communication, and coordination of a sound overall environment conducive to the educational objectives of the school. Three primary areas of oversight include the health and wellness of the students and faculty, the facilitation of a strong community and school climate, and the management of an efficient and effective schedule.
This position is a 12-month administrator position. The Middle School Director will teach one academic class in the Middle School and will serve as a member of the Residential Life staff, either as a dorm parent or as a duty administrator, depending on the needs of the School. The Middle School Director reports to the Associate Head of School.

Essential Responsibilities
- Work with the Middle School faculty and Administrative Team to deliver developmentally appropriate, mission-driven Middle School academic, extra-curricular, advisory, and division-wide programs.
- Collaborate with the Upper School Director on initiatives to improve the overall SSM-Faribault experience; collaborate with the Upper School and Online Division Directors on overall SSM student experiences.
- Supervise and support the Assistant Middle School Director and the Middle School Administrative Assistant.
- Oversee the efforts of all members of the MS faculty and staff.
- Work closely with the Director of Residential Life, Director of Health Services, and Head Dorm Parents to support the experience of the middle school aged boarding students.
- Communicate regularly with the Associate Head of School, Director of Community Life, Director of Health Services, Athletic Director, Directors of Centers of Excellence, and the Directors of the Center for Academic Achievement regarding student academic progress and health and well-being as well recommendations on how to best support each of the students.
- Assist in the creation of the schedule and delivery of classes in concert with the Academic Dean, Registrar, Department Chairs, and Athletic Director.
- Collaborate with the Admissions Office regarding evaluation of new students.
- Lead management of disciplinary concerns with the Assistant Middle School Director.
- Monitor individual student progress in the Middle School and ensure that there is continuous and timely communication with advisors and parents of students in all facets of their SSM experience.
Qualifications
- Candidates should have at least 5 years teaching experience, or other experience related to school leadership.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field; graduate degree strongly preferred.
- Experience with middle school aged students and boarding school students preferred.
- Demonstrated capacity to meet the responsibilities outlined above.
