St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 350 students and 100 faculty members.
St. Bernard’s offers young boys of diverse backgrounds an exceptionally thorough, rigorous, and enjoyable introduction to learning and community life. We wish to inspire boys to value hard work and fair play, to develop confidence, consideration for others, and a sense of citizenship, and to have fun while doing these things. We are seeking a part time Latin teacher to begin July 1, 2022, to teach second year Latin to seventh grade. This teacher will report to the Middle/Upper School Division. Students read, write, translate, and speak Latin as much as possible, and we teach grammar explicitly with the aim of supporting reading and translating. The latin teacher will also assist with the Prep period for fifth and sixth grade.
Responsibilities:
- Teach Latin
- Establish and cultivate a classroom community that promotes student confidence and community responsibility
- Uphold professional obligations that include but not limited to assigned duties, meetings, parent conferences, and school events
- Maintain records of student work and development
- Prepare materials and classroom for class activities
- Engages and supports students of varied identities, lifestyles, and beliefs
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests
- Attend professional development, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence
- Communicate respectfully, effectively, and consistently with a student’s parent and/or guardian as needed
- Use computers, audiovisual, and other equipment to enhance learning
- Perform other duties as assigned by Division Head
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Latin and/or classics preferred
- Demonstrated fluency in Latin
- Ability to teach an additional language such as French, Italian, or Spanish is a plus
- Current references that substantiate your teaching abilities, relationship with students, and knowledge of language
- Possess a deep understanding of curriculum, standards, and expectations for Middle/Upper School students
- Understand learning differences and demonstrate the ability to differentiate instruction in the classroom based on those needs
- Flexibility with classroom management, pacing of curriculum, and student expectations
- Contribute to a positive faculty culture by building collaborative and respectful relationships with colleagues and support fellow teachers and administrators
- Maintain professional standards of appearance, courtesy, responsiveness, discretion, punctuality, and attendance
- Strong interpersonal skills that allow the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, teachers, and administrators
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of Google suite (Drive, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, etc.)
- A willingness to participate in DEI workshops and discussions to maintain alignment with our Equity and Inclusion Statement
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice
