General Summary

Westminster School has an exciting opportunity for a Controller on its Simsbury, CT campus.  The Controller coordinates the internal control, accounting, and tax activities of the school to provide accurate and useful financial and related data for school users.  This is an onsite, 12-month per year, full-time position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of monthly and year-end financial data in accordance with policies, laws, regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles.
• Provide analysis and resolution of complex accounting and GAAP reporting issues.
• Manage the annual financial statement audit process and preparation of financial statements.
• Manage the annual 403(b) audit and preparation of financial statements and Form 5500.
• Manage and document accounting controls and ensure compliance with auditing standards and external regulatory requirements.
• Manage cash transactions and controls.
• Manage bond compliance including periodic reporting requirements.
• Manage annual tax filings including Form 990, 990T, 1142, state and local filings.
• Oversee and maintain the fixed asset system, direct determination of depreciation rates to apply to capital assets and ensure accurate balances in the general ledger.
• Oversee and record endowment activity including gifts, investment activity and associated allocation to endowment funds.

• Attend Board of Trustee Committee meetings including Business, Audit & Risk, and Investment. Responsible for meeting minutes.

• Collaborate with Business Office and Advancement staff and provide support and guidance as needed.

• Demonstrated proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Suite as well as a database accounting environment and spreadsheet software fluency.  Familiarity with Blackbaud a plus.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.
• Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience preferably in a school or non-profit environment, including a strong understanding of not-for-profit financial statements. Public accounting experience is highly desired.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Detailed research and comprehension skills.
• Must be highly organized and have strong time management capabilities, supervisory experience a plus.
• Demonstrated desire and ability to be a team player and collaborate with others successfully.
• Requires a high degree of professional character and ethical standards in the performance and delegation of duties.
