Responsibilities: The Assistant Head of Lower School for Student Learning will be a reliable, collaborative, and supportive member of the Lower School Leadership Team and will report to the Head of Lower School. All responsibilities related to supporting an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning of all subjects, including assisting the Head of School in the evaluation of faculty and staff. The Assistant Head of Lower School for Student Learning will serve on the school-wide Academic Committee, as well as Lower School Admission Committee. This is a full--time position and the schedule will be approved by the Head of Lower School.
Working with Faculty and Staff:
- Consistently coach, co-teach, model, demonstrate, observe and provide feedback to teachers in order to improve teaching and learning.
- Assist Head and Assistant Head of Lower School with faculty and staff observations and evaluations
- Attend Professional Learning Committee(PLC) meetings with each grade level, when applicable.
- Conduct regular meetings with teachers to discuss the scope and sequence of curriculum and support instructional practices and decisions.
- Conduct regular meetings with teachers to examine student work and monitor progress in order to support teacher reflection and action.
- Assist teachers with analysis of formal and informal assessment data on their students to determine student response to instruction.
- Collaborate with the LEAP team and Student Assistance Team to help meet the needs of all learners.
- Collaborate with the Head of Lower School and curricular chairs to ensure curricular alignment in all grades.
- Collaborate with the Head of Lower School and the Assistant Head of Lower School to provide in-service training on current research and best practices to teachers, assistants, volunteers, parents, administrators, and other appropriate personnel as needed.
Working with Students:
- Encourage and support lifelong learning for all students and Identify, develop and implement support programs for students in need of assistance and/or enrichment.
- Participate in Student Assistance Team (SAT) meetings concerning the academic progress of at-risk students.
- Provide, upon request, individual diagnostic testing.
- Serve on the Lower School Admission Committee, reviewing applications and attending Committee meetings.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress.
- Provide small-group instruction to support students’ needs.
Ongoing Responsibilities:
- Meet weekly, or as needed, with the Head of Lower School and/or Assistant Head of Lower School to review Lower School needs.
- Serve on the school-wide Academic Committee.
- Meet weekly with the Lower School Leadership Team, or as needed.
- Assist the Assistant Head of Lower School with student behavior and Honor Code when applicable.
- Meet and plan with each grade level during Professional Learning Communities (PLC) meetings once during each eight-day cycle.
- As part of Lower School Leadership Team member, assist the Lower School’s curriculum and instruction as well as current best practices based on research with the faculty, staff, and school community.
- Serve as a resource to parents.
- Serve as a member of the Lower School Student Assistance Team..
- Manage Lower School administration of CTP 5 and Milestone testing for grades 3,4, and 5 in partnership with the Assistant Head of Lower School.
- Provide data analysis to the Lower School Leadership Team.
- Provide data and assessment information to parents when applicable
- Continue professional growth and strengthen professional teaching knowledge and align with best practices, skills, and strategies through an ongoing program of workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work.
- Maintain a collection of professional materials that reflect current research and best practices.
- Maintain a collection of student support materials to share with faculty.
- Plan and lead Lower School Department Meetings in partnership with Head and Assistant Head of Lower School.
- Assume additional duties as a faculty member (sponsor an after-school club, join a standing committee, support carpool, lunch/recess duty, etc.).
Advanced Degree Required.
Experience with actively coaching and supporting faculty and staff is strongly preferred, especially with Math in Focus and Lucy Calkins Units of Studies.
Personable and engaging, patient, eager to collaborate, as well as maintaining a growth mindset is also strongly preferred. As we strive to be a feedback-rich school, giving and receiving constructive feedback is an integral part of this role.
